Doing about 60mph on slip road, coming off motorway.
Thought I had a flat tyre - truck jumping about and pulling to left. Pulled over and had a look around - nothing obvious. Got going again and ok until about 30mph when shaking started again, Managed to get home and further look around - checked prop shafts and looked for oil leaks, still nothing Any ideas guys. I hope you get the problem sorted quickly. Not being a mech-head particularly my first instinct was a steering rod/wheel issue. |

Hi,
Checked wheel nuts at road side - all ok Replaced brake pads a month or so ago, so I don't think this is the problem, but will need to get wheels off to be sure. How would I check tie rod ends? Is visual enough? Cheers, Steve Defender 90 TD5 Station Wagon Discovery 3 HSE BMW 330i Coupe |

You can often see tears in the rubber boot of the tie rod end and often get obvious movement if you just give it a push with your hand. Best thing to do is jack each wheel up in turn (start with the left as that is the most likely side). Make sure that the on the ground wheel is chocked front and back (couple of old house bricks or lumps of wood would be fine) then see if the off the ground wheel has any left to right movement by pushing it front then back. There should be little movement as it is tied (by the tie rods) to the chocked wheel on the ground.This can be more effective if you get a mate to do the pushing on the wheel while you look at the tie rod ends.

I should have added, if it is not a tie rod end problem then I suggest you get the vehicle to a mechanic. Other possible issues could be wheel bearings, suspension, steering box, swivel pins, etc. I still suspect a tie rod end issue though. Do keep us informed how you get on Steve.

Sounds like classic panhard rod bushes/bolts or swivel pre-load.

My bet is the left front wheel bearing, as i came sudden as I understand. A tie rod I would expect to be a graduall wear.
Like Garl said lift the wheel up off the grouns and put one hand at each side i.e front and rear and pull with one hand and push with the other and otherway around. If you feel play you just have to check if it is the wheel bearing or tie rod. Did your brake pedal get more travel braking? If so it is wheelbearing. This is exactly what happened to me while driving the Mrs' Mercedes. It turned out to be the bearing. |

Check the steering box tie bar. I had it crack on one of my landies once and at 30mph it rattled throught the steering.

Hi Guys,
Turns out to be the LHS wheel bearing, unfortunately no early signs just failure. Once I got the wheel off the ground the wheel was loose, about 5-10mm of play all round. I had already called the AA and he confirmed Bearing. Just need to fix it now. Are there any threads on this site for replacing bearings, I would like to have ago myself. If you don't understand why the brake pedal gets longer when you have a knackered wheel bearing, I seriously doubt your ability to change the bearing. Get it done by a professional, it's a critical safety issue. |
