Yes a good read more or less how I do it. I just take the short cut not disconnecting the brake hoses and just use a rope and tie the brakecaliper up to the spring.

Steve, it is simple. If you have bearing play your tyre will move sideways depending on the corner you take. because of this the brake pads will be pushed further back in the calipers. So the next time you use the brakes first you have to close the gap between the pads and the disc before you start putting force on the disc.
You can now easily see how it workes. Lift your wheel up again and push on the brake pedal and then look how much space there is between the disc and the brake pads.
Now shake your wheel so you are sure you got all the movement. And now look ad the pads again and you should see a small gap. If you now push on the brake pedal you should notice there is more downward travel the first time you push it. The second time there should be the normal travel.

Check the play on your other wheels too. I won't be suprised if there is some play too. Roel

Thanks Roel, I now understand.

Wheel bearing changed this morning with a lot of help from Landyandy and his spare bearings.

I will now work on the other 3 asap.

It turns out the drive flange was fairly corroded as is the offside front and the bearing dry as dry, so offside front in particular will need doing as a matter of urgency.

I had a quick look at one of the rear bearings. A fair glug of diff oil came out - so bearing running in diff oil?

Is that a problem?

Hi Steve,

Thats is because the seal between the axle and stub axle has been damaged or removed.

This is not a prob, and some people do it so that the bearing are lubed by the diff oil, and will probably last longer this way, also stops the splines from wearing.

Andy,

Thanks for your help and time this morning, very much appreciated. Bow down

I guess I can leave the rear bearings for now as they seem ok?

Well worth a check as it will only cost you the price of a new nut. The other side may not be the same.

But the O/S/F is urgent.

Personally I prefer grease for bearings, but as long as there is grease or oil it will be OK. For the splines? I don't have them on my Camel or 90 at the wheel side on the rear axle.

With my Camel I had to change the bearings in the first year I had the Camel. The other six years and almost 100000 Miles I didn't have problems. Ok I did maintenance about every year, I took the outer bearing out and stuffed the opening completely full with new grease, I also stuffed the bearing full with grease and I assembled everything again. Adjusted the bearing play. I took me a few hours every year but never had problems again. Roel
