I just noticed today, when gently cruising along at about 1800rpm a significant clattering noise develops. It's at the same frequency at the normal diesel clatter but louder. It goes away if I give a bit of gas or if I take my foot off and coast.
Starting is fine, idling is quiet, power seems okay, no fault codes. I filled up with fuel recently - Aral Ultimate which should be good quality. Any ideas? Try a couple of tanks of BP Ultimate and see what happens to the sound of your engine... You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Co-incidentally I first noticed this running on v-power diesel. Maybe this specific noise was louder or the engine was a little quieter, making it more noticeable.
TBH, unlike other diesels I've owned, I don't think premium (higher cetane) diesel makes any difference in my Defender. It certainly doesn't run well when swapping from premium to regular, but seems to adapt after a while and then runs just as well. Same thing in reverse swapping from regular to premium; at first it feels smoother and with more torque at low rpm, but starts to feel normal again after a while. Haven't monitored the mpg really accurately, but again no improvement with premium to justify the extra cost. From what I've experienced, there is some fuelling adaptation happening that is adapting better diesel down to some lowest common denominator. |

The more I think about it, the more it seems to have started a while after filling up with the Ultimate. I've got a new turbo/intercooler which has changed the sound of the engine so I'm hoping it's just the combination of the whole lot that's made me notice. Everything is just how I want it so now I just need to keep the paranoia at bay Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

What is there to 'cure'? It's an almost inaudible noise. The MY14 trucks have different power & torque specs don't they? Is this an emissions thing? |

HI MATT, read my post http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic29678.html fully. Sounds like you have the same issue as I had. I just solved it today by being able to do a pilot fuel learn program. You are right it is injectors and is basically detonation due to incorrect fuelling by the injectors and PCM. The injectors go out of tolerance over time and need to be readjusted electronically. This is what caused my rattle and is now fixed.

Yes - it does sound remarkably similar! Excuse my ignorance but how do I do a "pilot learn". For diagnostics I only have a BAS interface...
I've cleaned the MAF and I'm emptying the tank to refill with "clean" diesel and some injector cleaner. I'd like to do a full purge but haven't figured out how yet. I'm happy to buy some gadgets if there's a chance to avoid being b*ggered by the dealer What would I need? Cheers Matt Tell someone you love them today because life is short. i used the jaguar land rover dealer software called SDD and a mongoose cable. Pilot learn is one of the system schedules within the program that technicians can do after a fuel pump or injector change.
You may find a defender owner near you that has this software and is willing to do this procedure for you. It is not difficult. If you are inclined do a search for JLR SDS and mongoose cable on ebay. A chinese copy and software costs about $45. Alternatively take it to a dealer. It should only cost 1 hours labour. The software OR a dealer will check fault codes as well and give you a clue as to what is wrong. Good luck. |
