Ove the years there have been times when I have had intermittent starting issues (search for a thread titled "intermittent failure to start" IIRC), but - touch wood - since removing the main and starter relays under the offside front seat and tightening the connectors on them I have had no further problems.

It might be worth a try.

Both these relays pulled out of their sockets with very little effort, whilst others (wipers, flasher, etc) almost pulled the socket off its mounting rather than the relay coming out of the socket. After tightening the contact (by carefully bending the blade on the relay) they were all about the same.

Hi

Lately I had this problem again, and more and more often, until being blocked for two times, and having to call the Truck to pick me up.... Once in the middle of the forest after a picnic....

So the Def went to the dealer and the problem was the same as "blackwolf" a loose main relay. So the tech re did the connection and the def is -so far- good!!!

This just happened to me, symptoms were reluctant starting, cranking but not firing, stop/start starter motor engagement and finally today the burning smell that gave it away - I had thought it was an iffy immobiliser because it was very intermittent.

I found that the main feed from the battery to the fuse box terminal was loose causing high resistance, melted plastic and potentially fire. One side of the 100A fuse link was discoloured too.

Just updating this thread incase it helps someone else out. Luckily I just have a bit of melted plastic around the terminal and the whiff of smoke.

Dread to think of the damage that could have occurred if it had gone on.

Hey,

About my problem, i had the main relay for the feed to the ECU who had loose connexion. the dealer remade the connexions and it's all fine now.

Could have done it myself but didn't know where to look. This relay is located under the passenger seat (LHD).
