@GreenMachine & Shaggy
I had never towed a trailer before Monday morning. But I understood the mechanics of how to reverse. I did a training day from 9am-3.00pm on Monday. In this I drove to the test centre a little bit around the area and back with the trailer to get used to it (9am-1pm including half hour lunch) Then spent a couple of hours practicing the couple, uncouple exercise and reversing exercise. (1pm-3pm) Don't know how but I got the reversing bang on first time and everytime after. On tuesday morning I did two practice uncouple/couples and reverses then drove to the test centre (total time training on tuesday 2.5 hours max) Arrived had a quick sarnie then cracked on. With regards to the test it's a normal driving test just with different manouvres, so mirrors/blindspots must be checked regularly, no crossing of hands when steering unless it's the reversing evercise, indicating exits at roundabouts. Total cost including test, trailer hire for the test etc (used my own vehicle) was £493 plus the half tank of diesel I used. Course was with Macclesfield Towing Solutions. Great instructor passed with 3 minors and all in all Will Defender 90 XS TD5 (03 Reg) |

Am I correct in thinking you are allowed to tow anything as long as the trailer is less than the vehicle weight and a combined max of 3.5 tons?

This came in the booklet that the training people I used provided.
Click image to enlarge Once you have passed you can tow any weight... as long as your vehicle is able to tow it (ie it's within the vehicles capabilities stated by manufacturer) I think the max any normal category B car is able tow is 3.5tonnes though.. (not many can do this but the defender is one of them) Will Defender 90 XS TD5 (03 Reg) |

It's just occoured to me why as someone who has a grandad licence can tow without worry, it's because I have C1 + C1E and D1 +D1E. Those are the entitlements that allow me to drive up to the car/trailler weight limits and 7.5t lorries + trailer with a gross train weight of 8.25t. When it comes to minibuses, it's not for hire or reward and funnily enough weight limits do not apply!
In the back of my mind, I'm sure that at one time the GTW for a 7.5t lorry and trailer used to be 11t but that seems to have disappeared. |

Carried on with the major service started on my day off last Thursday.
Last week changed the engine oil and both oil filters, changed air filter and diesel filter, today changed main gearbox oil,transfer box oil,changed oil in both diffs, greased prop shaft sliding joints and u/j,s and the one track rod end that has a grease nipple ! Just need to take the wheels off and check brakes etc now although they all passed the MOT a couple of weeks ago without any advisories. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Used a funnel and a length of plastic pipe to fill the main gearbox as the filler hole is close to the main chassis rail. 2005 Td5 90 XS Steve |
