Pickles, why are you so dismissive? You have dismissed the idea of a 5 litre V8 last Defender very often (admittedly you may well be right, as it's such a great idea that it probably won't happen!). But you have also dismissed my recent guess that it will be a 3 litre (diesel) automatic. These are all speculations - but based on snippets of info from some that REALLY ARE in the know. In my case, it is from someone who sometimes posts on here, who is a friend of someone at JLR. Now, I appreciate that 'John in the pub's mate's, mate's dogwalker' isn't a great information trail, but we get what we get. It could be JLR playing games (especially as they appear to have even played a little game on here a few weeks back). But being as you seem to be dismissing almost anything, can you tell us what YOU are willing to speculate will be the last edition? Remember, speculating is good, it's what this section of the forum is all about! And you are often here, so you too must be mulling over what it will be. Now left.

I think the story of Defender production moving to India was picked up and repeated by several respectable publications; but i can't remember any of them saying it would just be 110. indeed, I recall, one publication went further and said there was now doubt on the move due to Tata's other models underlying poor performance in recent times. Sorry i can't remember any of the publications to point you at the original sources as they came through on various news feeds I subscribe to. |

So any thoughts on what particular engine this would be? Do JLR have one of these in their portfolio at present? Also, an engine of this capacity would probably have eye-watering power and torque figures - well beyond what the Defender power train could possibly handle. So would such an engine be de-tuned to current spec or would JLR fit a completely new power train? I think the latter is possible, think x trac, sadev or equivalent; but then this is then more of a Bowler rally raid model than a true end of production line special. I think no idea is too silly - JLR have the money and resources to do almost anything, it just may depend on how sentimental some of the senior management are about sending the Defender off with a bang; or how well they can argue with the accountants on the payback of susch a move. If it does happen, then it will probably be silly money, so I'll be looking but not touching! Last edited by Supacat on 16th Jul 2014 9:02am. Edited 1 time in total |

I think it was Pickles that said a 5 litre etc. couldn't be done - literally, as it would have to be 'homologated' or something - sorry, I have no idea what I'm talking about! So that appeared to be ruled out. On the thread that discussed this I asked if that was so, and no one came back and said it was wrong, so I 'think' we can assume it cannot be done. However, I have heard that it will be a 3 litre diesel, which I believe JLR does have, and it will be automatic. Now, this could be entirely wrong, but there obviously IS going to be some special last edition. Even JLR couldn't make a mess of it by not installing a drivetrain with something a little special. Now left.

I am with Pickles on this. Why on earth would a respectable car company like Land Rover, in todays environment of ever increasing attention to safety and environment, venture into significant investment in engineering, tooling, training people, etc. to bolt together a last of series with seriously different specs from standard as to engine, gearbox, transmission, brakes, suspension, etc.... to accommodate a modern big V8, or even a 3 ltr diesel, who both would have much more power under the hood for a obsolete truck design which already today is considered a danger on the road by many of the public. The last two versions have been electronically limited to 132 and now to 145 kph for good reason. Imagine the reactions from the green organizations if there suddenly would be a high powered last version without such speed limiters. (I guess it makes no sense to have a 200 HP or more Defender still limited to 145kph, no?) Imagine that LR would do that, and there would be deadly high speed accidents with a Defender which they themselves (not aftermarket tuning companies) have produced with such high engine power... You hear the press already talking, yes? I think Land Rover can miss that kind of publicity as the plague, they treasure their image of a modern high end car producer of, admit high powered, but also high tech, cars and truck with all the modern safety features and respect for pedestrians, etc.... The last edition Defender, if any, no doubt will be all about cosmetics, like the SVX for instance, maybe even more splashy if anybody in Solihull is even still interested in this now that there is full focus on turning out ever newer models at increased speed. Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

So much conjecture, so much speculation ....and it's all based on? Steve.
Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW. [Insert something impressive here such as extensive list of previous Land Rovers or examples of your prestigeous and expensive items, trinkets, houses, bikes, vehicles etc] http://forums.lr4x4.com I used to be Miserable ...but now I'm ecstatic. |

Plus there's there the whole rigmarole and cost of Type Approval.
It simply isn't going to happen! The last Defenders will be limited editions with the "signature features" all being paint and trim etc, which don't need tooling or type approval changes, along the same lines as recent limited editions. G'Day Puddle. "Dismissive"?...Maybe. I prefer "REALISTIC"? But also remember that I also said I'd like to see it! But, like I've said, I believe I won't,...for the same reason members following your post have said. It's not "just" "dropping a 5L 375KW S/C V8" into a vehicle that's designed for 90KW!!....drive train, gearbox, suspension, brakes, EVERYTHING would have to be engineered. IMHO there will be NO "mechanical" upgrades to Defender,....so in answer to your question about what I think "final editions" will be, I think they will just be superficial,..paint, trim, decals etc, a "heritage" edition would be good, but a "mechanical" final edition,...I don't think so. Just giving my opinion,..Pickles. |

Fair enough - points taken. Only time will tell. If it is only cosmetic, then I will be amazed at the 'games' JLR have played then, with the hearsay that is currently surrounding the drivetrain of the special edition. Either some people (who are usually in the know) are deluding themselves, or they have been got at by JLR. A company can talk up the idea of a special, but if it isn't as special as they have made out by subversive means, then it would be a let down.
I think it would be a great shame if the standard engine and box is in the last special edition that will ever be made of this iconic vehicle. And it's that which is keeping me thinking that they will do something good, not necessarily the hearsay. Now left. |

G'Day again Puddle.
Whilst I don't think there's any chance of a 5L "Final Edition", for normal retail sale through Dealers etc, I reckon that such a vehicle would be a ripper project for the newly created L.R. "Special Vehicles" Division. I'm sure there's a few buyers with deep wallets that'd be prepared to get one built to their specs,...I'd love to see that. I reckon the cost would be enormous. Pickles. |
