Just out of interest, I set a ruler against the "leaky face" of the old turbo manifold. Two sides of the triangle were flat but the other...

You selling the pre warped one? Is it not best to refit warped once skimmed?
What money is a warped, now machined flat manifold worth ![]() ![]() Andy |

Have just fitted a new BAS turbo. The improved internals are built into used units and skimmed, therefore (hopefully) won't warp any more. The picture is of the old one I took off. It will be machined flat and resold as it shouldn't warp any more than it has already, although naturally I will inform prospective buyers of its history

Ohhhh it's the turbo that warps not the manifold.

Sorry - I'm not always so clear - should have said the turbo face onto the manifold

Chipped / remapped vehicles by any chance ? I have heard of this on quite a few Range Rovers where they have been remapped by dodgy engine tech's over fuelling and increasing turbo boost pressures in excess - causing overheating and warpage

Remapped... but reputably by BAS - many others run the same system and don't have problems.
As big steve says above, if they do warp initially, once they are machined flat, they seem to be quite stable. Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Yes apparently it's not unknown for new and freshly machined steel/iron castings to distort after machining, known as 'green' castings. I came across it on a non-vehicle related product about 25 years ago which needed close tolerances - don't think they ever found a cure for that one. 2.2 90 XS

So, the new turbo is being refitted with a copper gasket, as well as a temperature sensor to check I don't run it over 800 degrees C

What are the symptoms of a warped turbo? How would I know?

It's just the manifold mating surface (triangular) that warps when it gets overheated. You would know when you get a screeching noise when you give it some gas (sounds like a slipping fan-belt or blowing through a blade of grass). If it gets bad enough, the gap becomes too wide to screech and you'll notice an exhaust smell in the engine compartment or through the air vents inside.
That being said, it's not likely to happen unless you're unlucky (like me) ![]() But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |
