Well 290 is a lot of fuel and say an average of £350 per fill would not only be costly but it would take about a hour to do! but do the tanks have pumps and guages or are they gravity fed?

On the other hand with an average of 12000 miles a year you would only need to fill up 6.5 times. Just the though of spending more time away from the pumps is great.

If you protect the tanks properly underneath it means there will be no need for any jerry cans on the roof thus brining the overall vehicle centre of gravity down nice and low, counter acting any rollcage/roof rack/roof tent.

Wing tanks are gravity fed into main tanks The wing tanks on our vehicles are doubled bottomed for protection. Cill tanks/pods need pumping.

12,000 miles a year Rolling with laughter Laughing Rolling with laughter Laughing One recovery trip was 3,500 miles Razz Our overland trips are normally 8- 25,000 miles.

Most people don't need that sort of fuel capacity . However we run on about 160 litres capacity and top up when the opportunity arrives. 200 miles between fuel stations with one fuel station out of fuel then you need large tanks! Especially when your mpg drops from say 30 to <24 mpg Lowest mpg I have recorded is 18 mpg on a 300TDi.

Have come across fuel stations with no fuel due to road conditions not allowing tankers through Another occasion fuel station with plenty of petrol in underground tank but electric pump not working!

I have one feeder tank in rear wing (waxoiled mild steel), plus a side box that takes 2 jerry cans (sometimes I take water, sometimes fuel, depending on destination and number of people): this gives a v flexible set-up.
only problem with the wing tank is that you don't know how much fuel is left until you start drawing on the standard tank, but it doesn't take military planning to know how far you have travelled since filling up!

Presumably if you got into the habit of filling it each day from the jerry cans then you'd be bale to monitor consumption easily.

I think I'll stick to cans for the time being. I'm sure an extended tank is the right solution but I don't have any plans that would require anything more than cans (actually if I'm honest, I don't have any firm plans at the moment that aren't within reach of a petrol station - ho hum Embarassed ). One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS

Old thread I know but I was looking for something else and came across it. I have the new safari equip tank which is gravity based. Great design, absolutely no interference with wheel/suspension travel. Cheap (ish) too, at least far more so than the others. There's a small balance valve at the bottom so ensure full drainage too, its a simple yet clever thing. If any of you are interested have a chat with Adrian or Tom at Safari Equip. They fitted mine too, 60 quid, which was a bargain, as it isnt straightforward.

I had a chat with them when I was at billing, great guys I think they quoted me £800 ish for a main and the wheel arch tank + fitting with both twin skinned S/S bottoms.

I also had a good look round brendan's 110 which had them fitted. He did say that you need to state your model year when ordering because the new pumas are different from the first ones. Russell

wyvern, its this one -

It's high density plastic, very nicely made. I just had a look at the safari equip site and its not on there yet, its a new product. From memory its either 25 or 28 litres, cant quite remember which. I get around 500 miles from empty to full. Give them a ring and they ll tell you more about it. it was definitely less than £300.

if you look at the pic, you can see the "arm" which goes to the right, on the left its harder to see but it "wraps" around to the point it reaches the normal fuel filler, you can just about see the join from the curved section to the flat section. fixes with two very sturdy brackets. Its been to morocco and had miles and miles of heavy corrugation to deal with, and some fairly hairy offroad stuff in terms of shaking and vibration. No problems at all.

Hi Brendan I just finish to install the 120 litres replacement fuel tank in stainless, exactly as yours. my doubts it is about the fuel pump

You need to modify somehow the fuel pump? as in the side has a lip that makes the pump not sit properly.

I believe yours its a puma mine is a 2004 TD5 don't know if the fuel pump its the same.

Thank you

yes i did, Brendan supplied one, 45L side tank in the end. easy to fit and fills off the main filler and that fills the main tank.

105/110L tank now, i loose a bit as i didnt fit a balance pipe, too vulnerable in my opinion Cheers
