Bigger Fuel Tank
Hello,

I love my Defender 90, however I would like a longer fuel range. Is there any replacement fuel tank that could hold more "diesel" I would love to have 1,000 KM range when I fuel up.

I don't want an Aux Fuel Tank, just something oem like with more range.

Is there such a product for me ? 2016 Defender 90 Adventure Edition

Don't think there is, although Overlander/Brendan does the aux tank that fits above original tank (in wheel arch) that holds a lot of fuel and just allows the fuel to flow into the original tank, no pumps or complicated toys. You just drive around with your fuel gauge reading full for ages, whilst it fills original tank.

What do you think of this

I don't want something that would compromise the off road clearance. 2016 Defender 90 Adventure Edition

That's the one I was talking about, I believe they are good and don't compromise off road ability.

So basically its like filling up the oem tank, no button to turn the other "tank" ?

How do you think the installation would be, difficult ? 2016 Defender 90 Adventure Edition

ditto on that, love to see a pic of one fitted to a 90.... anyone here in oz had one of these fitted....? looks like the easiest answer to my fuel woes.... Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming...

'Wow...! What a ride!

I think Brendan of overlander 4x4 has the wing tank fitted on his 110, and also supplies them, and has discussed fitting them at some point on here.

What your talking about is a flow through tank that will gravity feed in to the main tank with out the need to intervene yourself. And you would just fill up as normal. Russell

On our black 110 we have a replacement stainless steel fuel tank with a double bottom and holds 120 litres of fuel plus a stainless wing tank double bottom that holds about 48 litres. This gives us a range of over 850 miles, have not pushed it to the limit to find out exact range, but when orange light goes on have about 30-40 litres left in tank.

We can supply a 120 litre replacement tank for a 110 in mild steel from about £550 plus carriage. Stainless steel and double skinned bottoms are extra.

48 litre wing tanks for a 110 start from about £350 in mild steel plus carriage.

Large main tank does not interfere with departure angle.

Wing tank does not effect articulation. We run 33" tyres and a 2" lift. If tyres are full of mud and high articulation then the mud on tyre might catch on tank.

Wing tanks for TD5/TDCi holds about 30 litres and are plastic. If you have a roll cage fitted it may cause some issues with fitting a wing tank. We supplied one to DaveW and PamW for their 90 for their Australian trip. I think there is some information on their blog about fitting one to a 90

It is easier to fit wing tanks with wheel off and preferably on a 4 post lift. Probably the fiddlest/awkward bit is fitting the connecting fuel pipe.

Depending on what tank you have fitted you may have to drill a hole in main fuel tank for balance pipe. Best done with an empty tank!

Looking at official figures the 90 has a 60 litre fuel tank and combined fuel consumption of 10 litres/100km.

However fuel consumption is very much dependent on on driving style, vehicle condition and terrain being driven over. Low box and soft sand could easily see fuel consumption rise to say 12.5 litres/100 km or even higher.

For a range of 1,000 km that would mean a minimum of 100 litres fuel required.

The plastic wing tank which is a flow through tank holds about 30 litres and is suitable for a TDCi.

A LHS sill tank exists for a TD5 and holds about 40 litres whereas the RHS sill tank holds 50 litres.

Would these fit a TDci? That I would have to check out. Also will they impinge on ground clearance? They are a pump system rather then a flow through system.
