These units are designed with a space saver door to the right of the unit, which creates a full-length storage area:

However, it is not possible to open the door enough to use the space when you have a vehicle with a tailgate because of the right hand tailgate bracket.

So off with the door:

and on with a template to see what needs cutting out to make the door useable:

Cut out the rectangle and re-fit using stainless bolts:

Just need to find a recessed blanking plug/grommet to finish it off, sorting though my collection, I had nothing that did the job perfectly:

Plan to use the space for a breaker bar with extension and it also looks idea for tent poles when making trips.

Good thinking Thumbs Up . You can also look at cutting the door and inch in from the hinge and fitting an additional hinge. A bit more work, but very good at solving similar issues. Haven't done it myself(don't need to), but saw what someone else had done.

Hadn't thought of that, it would be neater and more original looking - but would that narrow down the opening and make getting things in and out that little bit harder?

It would, but only above and below the tailgate bracket as the bracket already restricts 'clear' opening. However, thinking about it you could in fact cut out a door like you have done and secure the cut out on a hinge and spring load it so it always looks as one until it touches the bracket. If you get what I mean, but could be more hassle than it is worth Idea

Landy Andy - that's only half a job - where's your imagination & a little garage engineering!

Is that a full length one? If so does the left hand front edge catch on the tailgate support every time you open it fully?
