A new rattle... **SOLVED**
I've got a new rattle! Only noticed it today on the motorway, seemed to do it above 50MPHish. When lifting off (i.e. taking your foot off the accelerator) there's a rattle from the back, sort of sounds like a thin sheet of metal flapping into another bit of metal... Hope that makes sense? Had a quick goosie underneath but couldn't see anything loose.

There's nothing in the back that could be making the noise, and besides it sounds like its coming from underneath somewhere.

Any ideas, or is another trip to the dealers due?

Hi, I should have put a reply on the forum when I got it sussed... whoops.

But it turned out to be the roll pin in the rear diff that had worked itself loose.

Would be good to add *SOLVED* to the thread title. Saves time for many.

Hi,

What is the roll pin in the rear diff and how did you find this out?

Well, I could be wrong so feel free to correct me, but I beleive it locates the pinion gear, and because the pin is harder than the casing it fits into it wears the hole & makes it bigger... Although I could be wrong.

I went for a drive with a mechanic from the dealers who knew exactly what it was right away.

I have a picture of an older diff that blew on my old 90 somewhere, that shows the roll pin.. I'll see if I can dig it out when I get home.
