Very nice
![]() How do you find the Trojan back when you aren't camping? Can things be removed from the middle to give a large enough space, or do you remove completely? |

I found myself in Wales last week, underneath some pretty amazing night skies.

Did I read you were getting your gearbox refurbed? How much was it and did it make a big difference to gear changes?
Cheers Ray |

Yes. I replaced the DMF, clutch and fork, rear crank seal and a couple of other bits and bobs in and around there.
The gearbox came from ashcroft and should have had the fifth gear upgrade but due to miscommunication between the garage carrying out the work and ashcroft, a standard unit was sent. The garage only realised when they had completed the job and were filling out the invoice. It is now back at the garage having the gearbox taken out. They are sending that unit back to ashcroft who will strip it, fit the fifth gear upgrade and send it back for the garage to refit!! ![]() Although the garage has made a bit of a boo boo, they have been brilliant about rectifying it and have even paid the extra for the upgrade which was not charged on the original invoice as a goodwill gesture. They even offered to lend me one of their employees personal vehicles as they do not have a courtesy car. I said no to this and dusted off my push bike for the commute to work. Anyway, the total damage was £1664 including vat in the end. Labour was £360 plus vat. I did get to drive the reconditioned box for a week because I had a camping holiday booked over half term. The gear selection is so much more positive although the inbuilt crunch between 1st and 2nd is still there if you rush it. Even the mighty ashcroft can't seem to undo that nugget of land rover design. My old box was also binding up in reverse and this has now been sorted. It is a little quieter but I suspect the majority of the noise is coming from the transfer box. I will let you know what the fifth gear upgrade is like when I get my car back next week 2002 110 td5 |

How much backlash is there ray? When I grab hold of the rear flange I can turn it nearly quarter of a turn and have been advised that is acceptable. Have you checked other less expensive options like drive flanges? 2002 110 td5

It's going in for its "garage service" at the beginning of August (I do a mini service in between garage ones) so I'm going to get them to check for ware on the drive flanges, but I just had to change all the oils in t box and gearbox back to original spec because gear changes were starting to get notchy after trying the difflock evo 1 and 2 oils in them last year, and take up on gear changes seems to have got worse and noisier

I also put in a evo 1 and 2 equivalent oil manufactured by Fuchs and found my gearbox was much better at first but soon deteriorated. I reverted back to genuine oils but the damage had already been done. I am not saying it was the Fuchs oil that caused the problems (it could just have been natural wear and tear on an already tired gearbox) but decided to change back just in case. 2002 110 td5
