I did some rust treatment today, getting busy with the hydrate 80. I knew this area would need attention in a few years when I bought it. Well, I had a scrape and a poke around with a screwdriver and I guess those few years are up!
Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge I think I will do he whole lot. Aluminium replacement panels from yrm metal solutions are not too expensive, and it will save unsightly pop riveted repairs. The sills will be taken, repaired and probably galvanised. Just when I thought I was getting on top of it all and could continue with the modding. 2002 110 td5 |

I have been looking for a reason to get back on the push bike. I guess this is it. It is not necessarily too difficult a job I don't think, but it will be the time it takes for parts to be galvanised and for me to paint them. Maybe 3 to 4 weeks?
As with all jobs I am sure it will present other things to me that need doing when it is all stripped down. How is yours looking behind the triangular sills you took off? Hopefully not like mine!! 2002 110 td5 |

Mine seems in pretty good nick but I've still got to sort the holes for the old seat mounts, it's only been a year or so since I fitted the new seats Ray My build thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic17615.html |

Cheers Greeni. She serves her purpose pretty well now. After repairs, I do have some ideas to modernise the looks but nothing major. Maybe black chequer plate and roof rack instead of bare aluminium and anthracite boosts. I might return the grill to black to complete the all black look. We'll see 2002 110 td5 |

I'd publicly like to thank Ian for building my Land Rover. Has anybody else found these pieces of tape in theirs?
Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Sorry about the rubbish pictures...taken on my phone. This is the second one I have found, both with "ian" written on them. I didn't think anything of the first because the name was not written very clearly. In all honesty, it could have said anything, until I found the second and then I put two and two together. 2002 110 td5 |

Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge That's one side stripped down. The good news is this side is a lot better than I suspected, so no repairing needed. The other side is a bit worse so I shall make a decision on that when it is removed. But I should be able to patch it rather than use the YRM replacement parts I bought, so at least they stay fully genuine. My wife asked "when will this obsession with land rovers end? This one (defender) looks like your other one did 8 years ago." How little they understand. 2002 110 td5 |

You've got to love the "mecano" like kit that is a defender keep up the good work! Did you say you were getting the sill/b, c post section galvanised? Ray

Taking it apart is easy. It's putting it back together I might struggle with! 2002 110 td5 |

Yes. I considered just having crimble powdercoaters put on the zinc base coat for me to spray over, but the way the sills are constructed means this would probably trap the rust that has started between the spot welded seems. 2002 110 td5 |
