I've recently had some problems with the cooling system over the past few weeks and need some advice.
1. Overheating with a cold radiator. Thermostat changed as was found to be jammed closed. Replaced. 2. Steam from bonnet as fluid lost via expansion tank cap due to leak in the EGR cooler. Cooler bypassed. . Solved? Have done a number of trips since and temperature varies between 76 and 82c depending on driving style, BUT water level drops in expansion tank from Cold Level mark when warm and returns to Cold level when left overnight. If the Defender is left for a few hours until radiator is just warm then coolant level is still below Cold Level but if pressure cap is removed slowly then you can hear pressure being released and the level rises to the Cold Level mark. IS THIS NORMAL or do I still have a problem. There is NO visible leak and the Defender runs sweetly at all speeds, and the coolant level always returns to the Cold Level mark. Any advice would be much appreciated. LANDYWATCH Neighbourhood Watch for Land Rover Owners http://www.landywatch.co.uk/smf2/index.php |

Air in the system is my guess, quite hard to get rid of. Original Member Pie n Pea Club.

Thanks for the info. All the pipes seem to pressurise when engine running. Checked the bleed valve by the heater valve, took a while until coolant came out. Munch90, the pipes on the thermostat seem correct, as you said it would be difficult to fit incorrectly. As regards the temperature, it only drops when stopped idling or travelling at low revs eg 30mph in 6th, normally 80 to 82c when driving. Heater works well.
If there was air in system then I presume that as it warms up that would expand BUT as system gets pressurised would get compressed. Definitely confused LANDYWATCH Neighbourhood Watch for Land Rover Owners http://www.landywatch.co.uk/smf2/index.php |

Have you tried draining the system, opening the fuel cooler lines under the passenger side of the chassis, flushing and re-filling? You may have a blockage in one of the smaller pipes.
When you start the engine from cold, with the cap off the expansion tank, can you see steam / white smoke? |

Whitewaitress, nothing from expansion tank when starting up with cap off. Fluid level now only drops about 1 cm when upto temperature and pressurised and returns to normal level when totally cold. I am going to get the EGR cooler replaced shortly and hopefully recharge the coolant system without any air locks. We'll see what happens then. LANDYWATCH
