Did some more work on the weekend

Point of no return (I think I passed it a while ago), cutting off the old engine mounts

Rolled the big crooked engine in for placement of the new engine mounts

I thought the alternator was going to interfere with the steering and I spent a good time looking at it. Even stopped for lunch to ponder what could be wrong

Once I leveled the engine out things were just find and it slid in easily

After this I tried to get it in the correct spot but I had to mate it with the transmission, I spent an hour trying to get it lined up. After failing to get this to work I pulled it out again and gave the flywheel a spin and loosened and realigned the clutch plate

I don't know if the realignment did it or if moving the flywheel around did it but it slid in easy on my second try

I now have to build up the engine mounts as they are a bit short from where they were cut off

I lined it all up with the rad mounted on the mounts but it seems to be that it is sitting a bit high. I have posted a question in the mechanical section on the height of the rad mount as it seems that mine is sitting a bit high.

Cheers

And a funny thing from today

When I was grinding off the engine mounts I thought I had set myself on fire (again) as my arm was burning hot, turns out it is just that time of the year so I set up the umbrella

Yes that's me in the engine bay

Took the day off today.....

I mounted the old rad and took measurements then put the new 300tdi disco rad in. It is sitting 3cm too high. I have now cut my rad mounts off and shortened them by 3cm

I should be able to line it up again on the weekend and hopefully get the engine mounts welded in

Been working away on the engine swap

Building out the engine mounts as the cut wheel from the donor mounts made them a bit short

Ill only show the nice welds.....

You can see how short they were without being build back up

Got the mounts in place then put in the newly lowered rad, things seemed to be off as the tranny was pushing the engine forwards. Turns out I need to cut the seat box (which I had forgotten)

Once this was cut everything slid in nicely and I was welded in the mounts

Did the plumbing last Thursday as I had the day off. I had the local garage flare a pipe for me but my exact and carefully calculated measurements were off a bit so I had to improvise

I also had to have a custom hydraulic hose made as the power steering unit from the 84 110 has a completely different end from a 300tdi. I didn't know how long it would take or if it was possible but they whipped me up a hose in about 2 hours

I pulled the wiring harness apart and had some "extra" wires that I am guessing were for an AC unit or some other things that I don't have....

Thanks!

My old Alternator from the V8 has 3 bottom wires and 1 top wire. The three brown wires all run to the starter motor. Not sure about the one on the top. The New alternator only has 3 wires D+ B+ and W. Essentially two run strait to the battery connection off the starter and one goes as the on switch to the dash and the ignition. I just pulled out the extra wire and left it.....

I am not sure what these two sensors are on the top coolant pipe. Any input would be appreciated (sorry for the bad pic)

Finally in for good (I hope.......)

My old throttle cable was cut and did not come with the mounting bracket. Unfortunately I did not get a shot (yet) of the cunning adapter plate that I made. It seems that the cable is a bit shorter on my V8 so I needed to make a bracket that had it sit a bit further back

Also another question. The sensor on the top of the fuel injectors (blue connector in the photo above) I think is a voltage regulator of some sort. I don't have this wired in anywhere. Anyone know if it is necessary?

I now needed to install the diesel filter. The cleanest spot I have seen for this is on the bulkhead with the two bolt holes that are in the perfect spot and the perfect size. I only realized when I tried to install it that they are closed on the back and have not access.

I was able to cut the bottom of one of them open and get two bolts in place with a magnet.....

We don't have the hard fuel lines in metric sizing (that I could find) here so I used high pressure nylon fuel injector lines.

I really need to tidy up the wiring......

For the speedo cable I sat staring at the tranny as I know where the square tip of the cable should go but it looked like the R380 had some kind of electric speedo. I thought I was stuck till I did some googling on the information super highway and found that this piece just comes right out.

There it is!!

Now I need to get/make the bracket that holds my speedo in as mine never came with one.

For a quick side project I cleaned and painted the propshafts with POR-15.

I actually checked them first as there are many conflicting stories on the internet about the propshaft length on Rover V8-LT95 to 300TDI-R380 and getting new propshafts. I have read that they work, the front won't work but the back is OK and some say none will work. I checked them and they look like they are a perfect fit and not any more extended than they were before.

After all of this I checked the wiring, got all of the hoses mounted, coolant in, diesel in, battery terminals on (waiting for smoke or popping....)

I hit the key and it started first time with no hesitation, I didn't even hear the starter motor turn and it was running!!!!!! Thumbs Up Mr. Green

I have more work to do before I can drive it.

Tidy engine bay wiring
propshafts on
install the top rad suports and the hood latch
Drive noisy Diesel to muffler shop for muffler (I only have the downpipe).
Gear lever on (still waiting for the bushing inside the shifter unit as mine was missing)
Get the inside back together
Install glow plug relay at some point soon
Check and double check bolts

Drive on!
