Malta 2007 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 PU Chawton White
Hi all,
I finally gave up fixing it myself. Got the tow truck. Took it in to the mechanics.... They swapped out the EGR valve with a new one. Made absolutely no difference other than a big dent to my pocket, and regular cleaning chukkas.
I turned up this morning only to find a bunch of baffled mechanics all trying to brainstorm! At that point the oldest wisest one points out that as the gas pedal was being pressed and released the air hose from the intercooler to the engine was collapsing. Eureka!
They quickly removed the air filter, no issues, then they removed the hose coming out of the air filter box, stuck a pair of fingers in, and he produced a sooty ball of kitchen towel!!

Started the engine and sure enough purring happily like the Puma I knew again.

What seems to have happened is, during the service, (or possibly the previous service last year), someone forgot a tissue in the Air filter. On starting the engine it must have got sucked in but found the MAF sensor in the way so got caught there. Eventually flattening enough to not hinder air flow too much.

When I pulled out the maf sensor to clean it, I unknowingly freed the paper towel, removing its obstruction. As soon as I started after replacing the MAF, the towel got sucked in to the base of the hose, (is there a small grid there?) reducing the airflow to a trickle. And has been lodged there since.
Hence the hopeless idling and not enough air to go up to even 1000rpm.

I finally drove off happily and had a very pleasant surprise. The power increase is even more than it had been in quite a while, leading me to suspect its been there a year since it's last service!
