HELP - MAF and EGR woes
Hi All,

just finished reading ALOT of information about MAF and EGR. My 2007 Puma, now at 30K miles, was giving the error code P0100, but seemingly working normally.
Following some comments here, I decided to clean out the MAF. removed it, i sprayed it with contact cleaner and put it back in.
I started the engine and it is now VERY jittery, knocking like crazy. It refuses to rev higher than 1500 rpm. Using an ODB2 scanner i can see that I am getting around 5 g/s idling to 16 g/s at the maximum 1500 rpms.

Could my ERG valve have died or do you reckon I killed my MAF when cleaning it?

Any suggestions are greatly welcome since this is my only vehicle!

Regards

Mark

nb my ERG valve was stuck a few weeks ago but a weekend in Sicily, driving on good quality diesel seemed to have fixed it, in fact the ERG related code never showed up again.

EGR issues can cause MAF issues to appear that are not actually present, just logging a DTC.
I had the same in the past, left the MAF completely alone, fitted a new EGR because that was putting up codes too.
No more EGR codes and the MAF code never again either despite not being touched.
I never touched the MAF because I know these things can be super sensitive so if your getting different codes after cleaning it that might be another issue.
If the EGR triggered the code and illuminated the MIL light but since gone off means there was an issue but it's no longer logging faults.
If it's anything like mine it will have done the above and then put the light on then went off, BUT it will come back again!
Maybe intermittently but ultimately will get worse and then get stuck either open or closed and then you need a new one.
Mine was stuck closed which meant I had the MIL but performance was fine.
If it gets stuck open though that's even more of an urgent problem.
Try a new EGR and then monitor, if you still get MAF issues you'll know it's the cleaning that's caused the trouble.
If no further issues rear it's head then the EGR was the culprit.
Best case scenario is a new EGR, worst is EGR and new MAF.
Not what you really want to hear I know, you can get them blanked (EGR) to stop future problems via a ReMap but you'd still ned a new EGR first, or at least I would anyway.

Thanks Steve,
so a failed EGR would stop the engine revving any higher than 1500 rpm? Gas pedal fully pressed it wont' go higher....

the funny thing is its still doing the cleaning cycle (chukka x 5).

That is probably the MAF, especially after you cleaned it did it do that?
If the EGR is still doing it's cleaning cycles (chukka's) does it make and squeaks or noises at the same time?

yes straight after I cleaned it and reinstalled it. Before that it was running normally, just with the engine light on (code P0100), which is why i removed it and cleaned it in the first place.

I also called our local parts supplier and was told he's out of MAFs, and they will take a couple of weeks to arrive!! So I really hope I can convince my MAF to get working again!!!

The weird thing is that it IS giving a reading, 5 g/s on idle up to around 18 g/s at 1500rpm. When I disconnect the MAF plug totally to test it simply stays at 0 g/s idling or revved meaning the MAF is not actually dead.

Do you (or anyone else) have any idea what the reading should be on idle?

Either way I'll have to order the part (ERG or MAF or blanking plate and BAS remap) from the UK and get them couriered to Malta ASAP.

Regards
Mark

I don't know what parameters the MAF should read at at idle as I font have the diagnostics capable of checking that even if I wanted to.
Brian (Lorryman) on here may be able to give you better tech details than me on details like that.
Try cleaning it carefully again and see if there is Sony difference.
EGR is about £135 and MAF £40 roughly.

so apparently MAF readings should be around the 20 m/s, mark. Mine are staying put at 8m/s . Just cleaned my MAF correctly with carburetor cleaner (NOT Contact cleaner) , no difference at all.

Went out, bought and installed a brand new MAF and absolutely no difference. Still cant rev over 1000 rpm and idling very roughly, sometimes even turning off.

Any other ideas anyone!?

Do you need to do something to reset the ECU to turn off limp mode maybe?

btw now throwing a new code: P006a and P0100 still there though both may be from before i swapped out the MAF.

Clear all codes, personally I'd disconnect the battery for a while and then try.
What fuel have you been using? Any possible fuel supply issues? / fuel filter contamination.

I had a new fuel filter (and full service) installed 2 weeks ago. then spent 4 days greenlaning in sicily, filling it with Sicilian fuel which feels WAY better than Maltese Fuel (we only have 1 type here, and its definitely the cheapest money can buy).

So I was filled with fuel from a station in Sicily. and yesterday was on the last bit of Sicilian fuel in the tank. (fuel light came on 5 mins before i got home). Till that point it was running fine, just throwing the P0100 error starting from a day before the service, (cleared it and it reappeared 3 drive cycles on).

Then i removed the MAF, cleaned it and from that point on the knocking and limp mode began and has not stopped since.

So you have a new MAF that should no longer be an issue.
Has the turbo been working perfectly as expected? Any smoke at all?

now that its stuttering away its giving out horrible black exhaust, and a plattering of black gunk, all over my facade which is where the exhaust is pointing....
but until i removed the MAF yesterday power wise all was well.

I have noticed a very high pitched beeeeeeeeeeep coming from the engine compartment that seems to stay there even when running. Dunno if that means anything.

What are the air flow readings now with the new Maf fitted?
If you are still hearing the 5x chukka chukkas disconnect the egr electrical connection and see if the engine runs any better. The high pitch beeeeeep you are hearing sounds like it could be either the egr actuator or turbo modulator?
Other points to consider are:

The new Maf was fitted the correct way around, arrow in direction of airflow.
There is no damage to the vehicle loom, check the loom around the engine lift bracket.
Clean the Maf electrical connection with contact cleaner.
Remove Map sensor and clean the bulb with carburettor cleaner.
Remove the engine plastic top cover and check the injectors are not loose or there is any pools of oil or diesel.
Check the fuel pipes from the pump to the common rail and look for diesel contamination.
Check that the tank breather is not blocked, with the engine running see if there is a vacuum in the tank by removing the filler cap. You will hear the air rushing in if the vent is blocked.

Try the above and let us know how you got on Thumbs Up

Hth.

Current readings and new crop of errors.
This morning will try out lorryman's suggestions.... Before calling the tow truck!

BTW was there a way to reset the limp mode? Disconnecting the battery for how long?

P006A MAP - Mass or Volume Air Flow Correlation (Bank 1)

Check the vehicle loom from the MAF to the EMS ECU. Also clean the MAP sensor bulb with carb cleaner and the MAP eelctrical plug with contact cleaner.

You will need a tool capable of clearing DTC'S to reset the MIL light.
