Trailer indicator flash
Don't kill me for 'not using the search function', I have done but can't find the full answer to my question

Last weekend I repaired my right rear indicator. The connector had been damaged and the previous owner had bodged it back together using bullet connectors, so it was full of water. I dried it all out and fitted a nice watertight connector - job done!

A week later today, I noticed I was getting the trailer indicator icon light up on the first flash of indicators - but with no trailer attached. I know some posts say this is completely normal, but I've had my truck for 6 months and it's never done it before, so what's causing it to start now? The handbook claims it should only flash when a trailer is attached.

If it is normal for them to flash, is it possible it wasn't working prior to me repairing the indicator and now it's working since it is fixed?

Funny, I just posted similar including comments about the trailer light.....
Don't worry about it, it's normal for it to just flash the once.
If you are actually towing it will flash constantly when you indicate. Although it's something you don't really notice.

Not towing = single flash

Towing = flashing with indicator constant.

Not sure why exactly if you didn't notice it before? Are the trailer lights LED or incandescent?

Sorry I didn't make it clear - it was the rear indicator on the defender that I repaired. I haven't towed anything since ownership (6 months), I don't even own a trailer.

I'm quite an observant person so I'm 100% certain that before today it has never flashed before. Then today halfway through my journey down the M1 it started to flash on first indicate and it's been the same since!

I'm going to borrow a light board tomorrow and check to see if everything works, if so I guess it's nothing to worry about! Just very strange how it started out of the blue...

Definately normal for trailer indicator to flash once without trailer lights plugged in....if it wasn't doing it before, you've probably fixed the fault Thumbs Up 1959 Series 2 Ragtop

Are you running standard lights and relay or LED?

The RDX led relay does. You adjust it to do that? LANDYWATCH

taken from site about the rdx relay
please read bottom bit
Have you noticed when you indicate the trailer light may flash once even when you are not pulling a trailer, well most other normal cars do not put a trailer light on for one flash. Well ours puts the trailer light when you are actually pulling a trailer. When you are driving without the trailer and you indicate the little trailer light will not flash.

Well that's Defenders for you? Mine does. 1 flash when indicating, without trailer attached. Trailer light flashing with indicators when trailer, which has normal bulbs, is attached.
I have the RDX light kit, except for the front wing side indicators. Whistle LANDYWATCH

Tested with lightboard over the weekend and all worked a treat.

Just another Defender quirk I think
