Hi guys
My 2011 defender 90 2.4 with abs & traction control has a wheel bearing crunching noise from the rear drivers side wheel. Ive checked for play, nothing, held brake on and nothing. Knock it to neutral and the noise stops. Any ideas on what is / stop it? Its driving me round the bend! Cheers |

So it's only doing it under power, if so I'd start at the back and work forward - ie check prop and halfshafts, diff, transmission brake and then onto the transmission itself. Steve.

It's definitely coming from the wheel brake calliper area. Only when in drive. Forward or reverse. I'm thinking it's spmething to do with traction control but wondered if anyone else has come across it?

I have a rear prop UJ gone, when I first heard the metallic crackling I was sure it was a wheel bearing/CV joint on the OSF wheel

Have greased props and they were in good nic.
My 110 had uj go and squealed and that was when it coasted too |

Thanks for your concern Blackwolf. I'm not insisting it's the wheel bearing, as title suggests... Wheel bearing collapsed noise. I'm saying it's definitely from that wheel. I've checked the bearing as previously stated and all is well.
There's no stone lodged either. The sound is similar to that of a roulette with the ball in play if that makes sense. And it's only happens when drive is engaged. Freewheeling in neutral does not generate the sound. I've never had traction control on a defender and am thinking that it has to be something to do with that. |

If its got abs it may be the sensor ring disintegrating.
One of my colleagues had something similar and on inspection found the magnets in the sensor ring had failed and were slowly finding there way into places they shouldn't be - what's worrying is it didn't come up as a sign on the dash. |

I can't think of anything connected with TC which would make a noise under power and not when not under power. A driveline component is more likely.
The point I was trying to make re wheelbearings (which I freely acknowledge I didn't do very well) is that at least one failure mode (when the case-hardened surface of a race starts to delaminate from the softer substrate) may not initially result in play. Hence I would be inclined to inspect the bearings if I couldn't find another defect. You could try removing the rear propshaft and taking it for a run with the CDL locked. |

oh and shaggy dog. Thanks for that, ill look into that too as I do feel the defender is underpowered to what it should be. Ill have to get diagnostics.
One thing though. if the sensor ring is disintegrating, wouldn't it throw a light up on the dash? |

On my co-workers, he said he thought it was just a bearing and had nothing show for ABS or Traction Control, but he found it when he put some wheels off the road to avoid a lorry and nearly spun as it was effectively inactive.
Luckily he had only very recently bought it so took it back to the garage he got it from, they stripped it and found it and replaced it. I think the common theme emerging here is strip it- if it answers your theory its solved, if not you can check it off your list. |

Stripped it down and couldnt find anything wrong. Bearing were fine and greased well, couldnt see anything wrong with sensor put i have taken pics as i dont know what it normally should look like. Will try posting them later.
The noise did stop for a day but has since returned.  |
