in the first picture where you can just see the brake calliper the pads look like they have been red hot by the colour of them , maybe wrong as its a bit hard to see

if they have is the brake binding on that wheel

I've not had the defender long. So don't know what's happened. I'm thinking that the abs isn't working properly on it and its independently braking on that wheel? Perhaps that's why brakes look a little cooked? When it took the hub off, on the disk you could see that it's been "on off abs braking" marks on it if that makes sense?

I don't think you would see any marks from abs braking as the pulsing is to fast and also when you put the brakes on the disc is in a different place each time so marks would never be in same place

the marks maybe from cheap worn discs with hard spots , or have overheated causing hard spots or distorting , bit hard to tell without seeing them

have you had the bearings out to check the tracks as a bad gone bearing still could have no play you could feel

you only need a rough bit a few mill wide to give a noise and you would never feel that as play , and defender wheels are hard to spin by hand to hear or feel roughness

also is the noise in straight line or worse on bend etc ?

Perhaps what i said didnt make sense. Umm. Rather than having a clean disk and a mark where the pad last made, you can see the "marks" on the disk all around it. In the years i have been repairing my machines and vehicles Ive not seen it before.

Ive had the hub out and checked bearings properly but found nothing. Noise is mostly apparent in a straight line when in gear, put in neutral and nothing.

do you mean there is a shape of the pad on the disc in diffirent places round it if so , I would say that's where it been park up with wet brakes and metal dust in pad material has rusted against the disc leaving marks on it , not uncommon if it has been washed and left to dry
and looking at the pads I would say they are binding a bit so would have excess dust and metal dust to rust

what about diff , maybe chipped or broken tooth on crownwheel or pinion , shouldn't be planet gears if noisy only in straight line
and diff what only really make a noise under load
