where does the gas go ?

If there is no leak it would still be there, but because its a gas, they will charge for it..

It works its just not efficient.

On any warranty task - any fluid removed is replaced new for free (hence my sump oil cost was dicounted off the service price) Mike

Mine was recharged also but they were explicit that it isn't a warranty item. I think they felt bad that they'd not been able to sort out the other items I'd flagged (and had caught them on the hop for not doing their job properly last time). One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS
+ New Defender 110 First Edition

Because it's a gas, it will leak over time - like air in tyres...
As I understand it most rubber etc. is very slightly porous to air molecules.

Either way, I think it's a normal service item, every 3 years or so it should be topped up.

Its nothing to do with Gas its something in the gas that lubricates the seals when the AC is on if you dont turn it on the seals dry and the gas escapes

I know this as I preech it every summer to our peeps who say their air con dont work first question I ask is do you turn the AC off

Oh once the seals dry out they are never the same Me I never turn the AC off at all when in the car Summer / Winter AC has its merits

Cars with Climate control suffer way less from this issue and I generally get the regass FoC on a CC vehicle but AC ones are a battle

If they want to charge you for it check the price first as Kwik Fit were doing a deal to re-charge air-con for £25 recently, had the wifes Zafira done and it was spot on afterwards! Andy

Weirdly it seems to work better when you start it from stationary (eg cools colder) than when your driving along Mike

That's normal for a defender. When you drive more outside air flows in through the gaps. Roel
