That's normal for a defender. When you drive more outside air flows in through the gaps.

No this isnt normal at all - i might not be explaining it. Mike

Weirdly it seems to work better when you start it from stationary (eg cools colder) than when your driving along

Think I know what you mean Mike - I had noticed this to some extent - I figured it's either the normal heater matrix heating up (and leaking heat into the system somewhere) or maybe a thermostat on the a/c unit itself, cycling the pump on & off once it's reached it's normal operating temp..?

This is a bit of a gamble, as you have no idea how much charge is left in the system. Too much gas can be just as bad as not enough. The system will have been designed and tested (hopefully!) using a "charge determination test" to ensure the correct charge for the right degree of sub-cooling. Sub-cooling makes sure that all of the gas from the compressor is condensed into a liquid before returning to the expansion valve and evaporator. I hope that's not too technical.

Best bet, in my opinion, is to get a re-gas done professionaly. De-gas and re-cycle, new receiver/drier, vac-down and re-charge.

Hope this helps.

In a previous post from Ken he mentions the lubricant. This is in the compressor to start with, and a percentage gets mixed with the refrigerant as the system cycles.

the canister i used had a guage fitted. we'll be buying an aircon recharging machine next year so it won't be a problem.

I actually think the same as my car is always in the shade from the scorching sun here in dubai, as temperatures reach up to 50 degrees, my a/c does put alot of stress on the engine especially in traffic. When back on the motorways my a/c does start cooling again. Wish the defender had cooling seats Mr. Green '08 LR Defender 110
