Agreed, in normal situations you wouldn't attempt climbs that you know will fail. It's a bit different in competitions when Alpha Male syndrome kicks in.

I've seen some scary reverse decents when reverse hasn't been selected quick enough and the vehicles slides down with all four wheels locked, out of control. My method may be not be text book, but it works in extreme situations.

text book is dont use the handbrake on a failed climb.

as you mention key advantage of the transmission handbrake and CDL locked is benefit of a wheel being braked on the front and rear axle, which is good for off road parking (left in gear and engine off etc) Cheers
