Defender td5 flat under load after bigger intercooler
Recently fitted a bigger intercooler it has made a difference, however quite often under hard acceleration or when I change gear and go full tilt again my Landy goes flat a smokes more and just doesn't sound the same or even happy if you know what I mean, especially when towing, maf meter is fine, and usually if I lift off and go again it's fine? Turbo is standard and at standard psi. Any ideas?

will need one of the tuning boffins to confirm this, but it could be that the larger I/C is doing its job... cooling the air, which makes it denser.

Thus the MAF is is getting more air through it at any given revs than it can handle, and freaks out (they have upper limits as to what air flow they can compute) and so is giving the ECU the signal to back off a bit.

Mine does it with raised boost, You can get modified MAF's I think, certainly different boost boxes (IRB does them) that allows the MAF to cope with greater volumes of air.

I'll check the hoses before the turbo didn't even think of those? Embarassed I did check the intercooler pipes and they are fine.

Also bear in mind that the larger inter cooler is a larger pressure vessel that your turbo needs to fill, your turbo with standard boost will struggle to fill it and maintain pressure so you will get more lag. www.td5.org

Will it reduce the life of the turbo much if I changed the pressure, and if I did that would I then need a boost box? Thanks for your help so far Thumbs Up

Been looking at boost boxes from alive and tmd, both sound as if they would cure my problem by adjusting waste gate and using a box, which would you buy? Confused

When you changed the intercooler was it remapped?

I would have thought that to get the best out of it then just changing the intercooler isn't going to do much as its not going to have the right air to diesel ratio

Mine has a full size intercooler and boost box running 1.5 bar and is remapped to suit but i have not tried one without the other

I would think your best off asking Gary at Alive he is very helpful as there is no point buying more bits to try unless its going to sort it

Mine had a moment a little while back sounds a bit like your problems and it turned out to be the airflow meter

You may know already but you can unplug the airflow meter and drive it won't go like it should but it will drive ok and if the symptoms are different then its prob just that.

It could also be the waste gate sticking and over boosting

I would have a look at that as well but i woudn't adjust it with out a gauge and it would pay to put one on first so you can see whats going on as a little is a lot on the rod lenght

Its chipped, egr removed, silicone hoses, and pipercross filter, it use to go like a rocket but is just abit sluggish now after a bigger intercooler, MAF has been unplugged for afew days and doesn't seem any different to drive. I do spray abit of wd40 on the turbo actuater now and then i will give it another check.
