I’m not a great whisky connoisseur (although I can tell the difference between JD and a REAL bourbon from Kentucky such as Maker’s Mark), and fell for the Single Malt hype and combined a long holiday in Scotland and the isles with a whisky trail, buying a bottle of everything in “The Idiot’s Guide To Whisky” or whatever it was I had, in each of the “usual suspects” distilleries.

Went into Morrison’s in Inverness, and there they all were, at a fraction of the price I’d paid for them at source.

Try there first!

My local brew is rather smooth - Talisker, not the 10yr old, that's a bit rough for me, but the 18 year old is very nice, or a Glenmorangie or a Glenfiddich Thumbs Up Series IIa Lightweight - Long Gone

Mortlach 75 Years Old by Gordon & MacPhail
and if you want to toast that new AB in your garage, you really should be splashing out on some of this:

"This bottle of Scotch, released by Gordon & MacPhail, may cost more than your car. But sometimes special things come at a high price.

The scotch was produced by the acclaimed Mortlach Distillery in 1939 and poured into a first-fill sherry cask. Over the next 75 years, it picked up notes of dried apricots and pomegranate, as well as hints of spice and creamy vanilla. It finishes with a smooth, smoky flavor.

Nearly as impressive as the scotch is the teardrop-shaped decanter that was handcrafted with 75 etched cuts, each representing a year of the whisky’s maturation. Only 100 of the vessels were produced, and each comes with two matching crystal glasses and a leather carry bag.

From $30,000, gordonandmacphail.com "

I love the Islay malts, but can also be attracted to some of the speyside offerings, but only if the Springbank is running low.

The beautiful and long suffering wife bought me a barrel of Bruichladdich eight years ago, will be ready to bottle soon, so that will be my favourite when it is on stream. 80" 1948
