Safari Equip have a good reputation, but can you not just adjust the catch? Darren

I've had a Mantec since about 2004 and it's ! Mine is fitted to the early door.
It closes beautifully with no spare wheel on but rough as hell with the wheel on and requires slamming. The plate that that the piston bolts to has worn so much that you can hear the rattle over the racket made by my 200Tdi! The wear means the carrier moves about 0.5-0.75 of an inch. The rattle has now caused the shutting post to fail and I struggle to close the door and get it to lock without multiple slams. The powder coating is massively poor and it's rusting badly beneath the coating. A friend had his carrier shear off completely whilst driving just leaving the mountings on the right hand side! He said it was only 3-4 years old.... |

If Mantec is the one for you go to Barry at Flatdog for it as he has the best prices for Mantec gear.
Safari Equip which we have used for a long time and supply do the widest range of wheel carriers. Their standard wheel carrier is for either pre or post 2002 doors, with or without high lift jack mount. Comes in three finishes, powder coated, galvanised or galvanised and powder coated. They also do a version for a drop down tailgate They also do a single pivot version which does not need any drilling. Nakatanenga also does a single pivot. They have a new one coming out shortly and I am eagerly waiting to get my hands on one. The Safari Equip wheel carriers are not on our website at this moment, so either pm me or phone me and I will give you a price/availability. Brendan |

Thanks all, esp JR and Brendan.
I'm not impressed with JR's experience. I don't like the sound of it. I seem to remember ages ago someone onhere designing their own carrier which may have made it into production. Perhaps that's the Nakatanenga one? I'll have a look around and defo give you a PM, Brendan. If only we could go for bonnet mounted - that was such a perfect design feature. Or what about Wolf style side mounted. Anything has to be better than bolted to a flimsy rear door. |

I wonder what the visibility out of the front is with that on the bonnet.

Depends how tall you are I think
I'm 6'2" and I can see fine over my 265,75,16's no problems but I have heard of shorter people trying it and not liking it. |

That was the Sonic3d one now made by Alisport, and it is an exceptionally good product. Whilst it is unbeatable for a tailgate-equipped vehicle it is not ideal if you have a rear door, since it has to be released from outside and consequently someone in the back could not let themself out in an emergency. It is also rather pricey. Click image to enlarge |

We have a 255/85/16 bonnet mounted on a 300 TDi bonnet
On a Puma bonnet I would suggest that the Australian carrier would severely restrict visibility towards the nearside front corner. Am not sure I would want to drive a Puma fitted with a bonnet mounted spare wheel. BW, I think you are confusing makes. I think that wheel carrier is a Kaymar one on the pick up. The Sonic carrier which is now made by Alisport will open with the rear door, whereas the Kaymar has to be released so is not suitable for vehicles carrying passengers in the rear. Brendan |

Brendan, i hope I am not confused, at least, not THAT confused!
The photo shows the back of my truck with a carrier I bought off Matt (Sonic3d) himself before Allisport took over and it definitely doesn't open with a door. Mine is slightly modified to suit the full width IW rear flap. |
