Could a faulty injector...
Hey guys,

My Defender has developed a knocking sound. It started as a tapping sound under load 2,500/3,000 RPM, normally up hill. The noise seemed to develop from a tapping sound to a knocking sound over the course of a few miles. I thought it might have been the Pilot/Spigot Bearing or Clutch as I had just changed them both. So, I decided to opened it up to see if anything was amiss. All was in order, so it went back together. I then drove around two miles before the sound got so bad I had to stop the engine. It sounds as if the big-end has gone.

I have been told by my local Land Rover Specialist that a faulty injector could make my engine sound as if the big-end has gone. Is this possible?

The sound does seem to be coming from the back of the engine.

This post follows on from my post ''Pilot Bearing Issue''

Thanks in advance.

Liam

I hope you get sorted. the only advice I can give you is it would appear my heat shield has been causing me a load of grief. Probably nothing to do with your issues but all I can say is for the sake of a few seconds makes sure the whole of the turbo heat shield assembly is secure.

good luck

Caterham,

During the clutch change the down pipe/cat came off and back on. The bolts are all present and tight.

Thanks though!

WOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOO! Sorry, can't contain myself!

Short story, No3 and No4 injectors were loose, and bouncing up and down. Tightened them down and all is good. Very Happy

So be aware!

Thanks for the tips guys.

Let there be snow!

Thumbs Up

slim,

great news that its sorted. I'm sure I don't have the same problem however I've got to the point that I want to check everything I can.

was tightening the injectors as simple as it sounds?

Hi Caterham,

Cheers, I'm well pleased. Very Happy

I didn't tighten it myself but I believe that it is one 8mm bolt per 2 injectors. If you remove the plastic cover then it should be obvious. Be careful not to over tighten them though as the head will be made of alloy. Hope you find the root of your problem soon.

Cheers.

On my way to check my injectors........but gents,I have similar noise coming from the engine. But as soon as I engage my clutch(step on the clutch), the engine runs lovely.Engine also seems to run good on a cold start.

should really fit new copper washers on the bottom of injectors and have the injector sets checked , esay to remove injectors . if seats are damaged you may need I seat cleaner its like a long reamer bit like a water tap washer reamer .only needs normally a couple of turns to get good seat back .

if there blowing they can build up carbon under the washer and will never seal 100% just by tighten down

if there quite loose you get misfire or not so loose a chuffing sound and smoke from oil filler cap as puma washers are internal
