Does anybody else get bad changes from 1st to 2nd, and 2nd to 3rd.
If I rev beyond 3000 rpm I can get a smooth change but otherwise it grinds a bit. Just trying to work out if its me or do LR need to have a look at it. The car only has 800 km on it so far. Regards John D - Defender 110 2.4 |

Yep. I find the harder I push it, the smoother the changes are. That's not to say I can't get smooth gear changes at lower revs, but it's a bit hit and miss depending on how lazy I am being. 2007 Defender 110

Both mine change very smooth car like in fact well so I'm told. Ive not driven a 'car' for quite some time. Get it to the dealer and ask to test drive an other to compare

You just need a few more kilometers to learn the gearbox in my opinion.
My wife uses the Puma as her daily and I have to re-learn the geaqr shioft technique on weekends but you definately need a firm swift movement of the gearstick to engage. Puma 110 - gone Series III 1973 - going strong |

my 1st to 2nd is notcy and ive just put it down to only 4k miles - i certainly dont want another argument with the dealer yet! Mike

Seems like my notchy 1st to 2nd shift isn't unique. My guess is the synchro, because if I shift slowly it's OK, thus allowing the gears time to slow down a bit. The only trouble is, especially on a hill start, I run out of momentum and almost come to a standstill. Pulling into swift moving traffic can be a bit tricky too. Land Rover seem to think it's down to the "gear selector rod" being out of position. Sounds like another typical fob-off, I'll let you know how it goes next week when I get it back from the dealer.

Am sure, if you do a search, this has come up quite a few times,
Seams to be that a "Defender drive style" is called for ie clutch to throttle control timing My has always been fine, and quite smooth, certainly compared to previous TD5's California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1 Main Brian James Trailer Dealer for South West UK |

It takes some adjustment. I'm used to the fairly sluggish throttle response on the Tdi so the relatively free spinning Puma makes me feel amateurish. That's what Guy Salmon told me about my TD5 Ninety. It's obviously the syncro. |

on a related note - how much play do you have in your gearsticks in gear and nuetral - mine in 4th has a reasonable amount so much that it rattles at some RPM - apparently normal - one word i have for them B.....Ks Mike

I also have some problems with 2nd gear. Sometimes I can hear crunch coming from the gearbox while shift to 2nd. Especially when gearbox is cold. And sometimes (I don't know proper english term for it) it just disengages... Coming from 2-nd to neutral.
It's the only gear I have problems with. |

Mine has done 13k miles now and has form the start had a notchy 1st to 2nd & 2nd to 3rd but it is better once warm.

Sounds just like the box on my TD5 - The only problem I have had, other than those created by my dealer!!! |
