England 2005 Defender 90 Td5 XS CSW Bonatti Grey
The aluminium panels are probably produced by the aircraft industrie's 'rubberpress' tooling.
This only worke with a very maleable material. (Hence the loss of Birmabrite.)
New, very expensive tooling would have to be made to produce the panels in steel.

United Kingdom 2011 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 USW Keswick Green
"Land Rover insiders" have been saying all sorts of things over the years, few of which have come true. They were telling the magazines in the early 1990s that the Defender only had a couple of years left of production. They have said the same things many, many times at various points. I do believe it is now happening as it was announced publicly by named individual. Until someone with a name and photo, who can be traced up, comes out with something, then I will reserve judgement. By my feeling is that Defender production will end for good in 2015, with no foreign manufacture after that date. We/you need to understand why the Defender is being killed off, and it is nothing to do with safety and emissions, and everything to do with brand image and style. 2011 110 USW

What do you mean by this? It can't be a volume thing as the total volume out of solihull is relatively small.

The other Huge burning question is that of 2015 ? How can it end in Dec 2015 when EU regs must be adheared to by March 2015 . Making end date of Dec 2014 .
Its all very well LR lawyers trying everythin to prolong this date but EU is steadfast to March 2015 .

Not suggesting they will do it, but Lotus had same issues previously in 2001 and used sva route for final batch of vehicles - so there's always a way if you can duck and dive Smile

“EU regs must be adheared to by March 2015”

Which EU Regs exactly? Or, more particularly, which ones apply to the Defender (some light commercial vehicles have to comply with EU6 by September 2014, others by September 2015; first registration a little later than those dates, of course)?

There will definitely be a final edition, and it will be expensive, but is yet to be fully defined. You need to look at the Icon type vehicles to get the idea and pricing (££££) . It will not be like previous editions that were really just a combination of parts lists. The end is nigh.

Yep. I'm guessing a one-colour 90 (not 110), big engine, auto box, comfy seats...and a £50,000 price tag. Because that's what Land Rover does. Anyone else got any thoughts? Now left.

IMHO, you will not see a big engine, or an Auto.
Different/better leather seat combinations have already been introduced as apparently has DSC, so I think you'll see several options included with perhaps a special paint.
As far as ordering one is concerned, well this is an interesting scenario. I was at my Dealer's yesterday, & they have no 90s in stock, and only a few 110s. Anyone ordering a customer build will have to wait until the Dealer gets another "allocation", before the build can even be ordered,....that will take the waiting time up to 7 months in Aus,......so with production ceasing in Dec 2015, and with increasing interest, it will be interesting to see when JLR will stop taking orders because they simply wouldn't be able to build them before the line closes on 20/12/15. Any comments on this from UK Dealers?
Cheers, Pickles.

Well I'm just glad I got mine ordered when I did. I was tempted to wait till later in the year, but rightly or wrongly I'd rather not risk it. I really cant imagine its going to be an easy task getting one of the limited last editions either.. Never mind the huge price tag!

I have had it suggested the final series price will be in excess of £50k possibly as high as £70k. I agree it cannot have another engine or gearbox as it would need homologation. You would hope it would have some engine mapping mods , but the rest will all be in colour, design, interior in the way of Icon and Twisted conversions. Numbers will also be limited for each market. I am pleased with my LXV, it seems a bargain now , even if it is just a combination of parts off the shelf.

Switzerland 2009 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SVX Station Wagon Santorini Black
^^ I doubt those prices very much. It is not worth for Land Rover that they would be called "racketeers" and other niceties like that. I think for a big company which is thinking more than 5 years ahead, it is going to be more of having a final edition with cosmetic upgrades only, and at normal prices, so that they can say goodbye to the era of the Series and Defenders in style....
When in 2008 they launched the SVX versions, my 110 SVX here cost actually severy 1000s less than if I would have ordered a regular station wagon with full specs to bring it as much as possible in line with the SVX equipment. And then I would not even have the Recaros included at that time.
Admit, the SVX was quite a stunner at the time (still is Whistle ), so if they would have wanted to, they could have made much more of a premium for it.

I guess there is a market for a highly modified Defender, otherwise Icon and Twisted would not sell them. Why should LR not do the same ? You can keep your SVX as an iconic bargain !

Indeed, and not just Nene and Twisted. Could someone in the know on such matters please comment: Is it REALLY the case that to slot in a large engine and auto box, LR would have to homologate the model? Really? Is it because it affects its crash 'certificate', or something? If so, how come an aftermarket company can do what they like with a 90, and sell it on - like Berkshire Land Rover do, even adding 'somewhat precarious' hub adaptors? Now left.

As I said, companies like JLR have to abide by different rules these days, including remaining politically correct. That goes very far now, and includes safety considerations, pricing, brand image, etc. All too easy today for multinational companies to get attacked by undesired interest groups. The Icon and Twisted types don't have to worry about that.
