“never had an engine problem with it!”

Nor me - replaced a TD5 after ten years and 200,000 kilometres for a Puma and regret it - one injector harness changed on the TD5 as a precaution rather than a breakdown. Yearly change of filter, rotor and Magnatec…

Countless half-shafts during that period, though!

My 90 has 158k miles
Well tuned and well thrashed
With regular servicing runs sweet
I think the initial panic over reliability was a fallacy

Obliviously standard faults like injector harness and FPR. But nowt major

My 2003 90 td5 has 131000 miles on it now.

Alive Stage 1 remap since 110k ish (miles per gallon and smiles per gallon both gone up)

Driven hard on the road, and used off road.

Engine wise, regular servicing and I've hardly had to touch it with a spanner.

Fuel pressure regulator went at about 60k iirc, replaced with new and not had a problem since. Manifold warped shortly after remapping, skimmed and refitted, but believe I may still have a leak so either redo or think about an Allisport one.

Clutch and DMF could do with being replaced, no slip as such but it judders and groans occasionally so probably more a release bearing if anything. As it's all got to come off, I think im going to just bite the bullet and get the tbox rebuilt with 1.2 ratio (disco gearing) and contemplating getting the gbox reconned while its out too at this mileage (plan on keeping it).

I agree with

Mine is a relative baby, 2004 68000 miles. Replaced the injector harness and seals and it runs beautifully. My last one 2002 sold at 80000 same as above, ran with no problems. Love the TD5, such a great sound.

Obviously everything around the engine is falling apart but hey ho.... Laughing Michael was just telling me a story about a friend of his who slept with a land rover, lonely nights in the desert..

Sounds as though I have got a vehicle with Hugh potential for work and mileage Very Happy
Prior to getting mine the dealer replaced clutch and DMF (nice) and I think I have learnt a lesson regarding driving style as it responds well to hard driving!!

As stated on another thread.....

I doubt if there are (m)any forum members that cover the mileage per annum that noworries4x4 does in his Defender(s). Drop him a 'pm' perhaps? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!!

Got an opportunity and been looking at a 52 plate 90 2003 td5. 150,000 miles. I am not mechanical minded, will take my brother to look as he is if that mindset. Looking to do say 5,000 a year in it as a second car.

Can you point me to some areas (excluding bodywork) where I should focus on to ensure it's running right?

Tack

2003 110 DC with 102k on it, had the injector harness done at 99k just after I bought it and currently in hospital having a recon gearbox, transfer box and clutch fitted, DMF is ok so that's one less expense. Also having an electrical fault with the accelerator pedal looked at at the same time, keeps putting the MIL light on after driving through any puddles!!

my 110 has117,000 now and had a new clutch ,i once had a 1999 td5 disco in 2002 with 136,000 on the clock , then i did a deal with well known independent dealer for a 1999 90 with 83,000 on clock , 18 months later the same dealer was selling my same discovery with a lot of upgrades, with only 82,000 miles ,well i was mad ,my main thought was how many miles did the 90 really have, well as it happened i took the 90 to 128,000 with no problems

@shazzy90

Wonder how common that sort of thing is? My dad sold a Toyota hilux to a dealer with over 200k miles on the clock which didn't look or drive like that kind of mileage less than a week later we see it back up for sale with 120k on the clock Rolling Eyes 2001 TD5 110 County Station Wagon - sold

Interesting, I bought a 1996 Defender 90 from a well known independent dealer with 85k on the clock but it was an absolute money pit, had numerous cambelts/mod kits fitted due to eating them, radiator, turbo, clutch and a full engine rebuild. I often wondered if the vehicle had been clocked but had no way of proving it. Won't mention the dealers name but he has been done for it before I later found out!
