thinking they should come on with high beam, too.....what do you reckon? Twisted Evil

They're illegal for use on a public road.
Officially it's not allowed to be able to switch them from the driver's seat.

Its actually NOT illegal to use driving lights at any height on the front of the vehcile on the main beam circuit.

The main beam circuit has the required warning light to show they are on and switched not to dazzel.

FOG lights cannot be used any higher than the bumper - these are the only lights that carry this legal height and position stipulation.

So you are free to fit and use driving lights on the roof! (which as to be good Thumbs Up )

Don't they have to be mounted at the front of the vehicle to be legal?

No idea....i'll fit them anyway, and try not to blind any on-coming coppers!! Rolling with laughter Mark

Fog Lights can be fitted higher than the regulations allow for, but they then become "Driving Lights" and must conform to the Driving Light regulations, i.e. only on with main beam.

Most people with roof lights use a pair of fog lamps on the outer mounts to give a close wide spread of light and a pair of driving or spot lamps on the middle mounts to give some distance -

Anyone on here have any exp/pics of a defender with roof spots, but (being fussy) - the Hella ff50's?

My mate has fitted Hella FF50's on a roof bar to his Range Rover, he's used a pair of fog lamps and a pair of driving lamps -

To mount the lamps below the mounting tabs, he had to use a longer mounting bolt with a spacer tube, because the lamp's body fouled the roof bar.

Thumbs Up

Quality....nice one Paul, thanks. Good pic, too. Certainly think they're the ones I'll be going for - personally think they look the best I've seen so far. Shouldn't be a problem fitting them as they'll be going on top of my mounting points on my roof rack (don't think there's room under, anyway!).

Good idea about the 2 outsides being fogs, 2 middle ones being spots. Still have all 4 come on with main beam though, I'm assuming? - Think I'd keep it that way, would certainly give a great spread of light, esp with my Wipacs on the A-bar too!

Do you know if he has much problem with the Hella's (fogs, especially) lighting up his bonnet when they're in use? Mark

They can be mounted upright or pendant - so no problems there.

Yes - all 4 come on together with main beam, but with a switch in the feed from the main beam so that they don't have to come on with main beam (MOT time, etc...)

They do light up the bonnet, but on his Range Rover it's not given him too much of a problem, as it's Dark (Ardennes) Green.

He was thinking of making some shields to go under the lamps, but hasn't got around to it yet Rolling Eyes

If you did want to make some shields to fit under the lamps, it should be fairly easy to fit them, as the lamps mount with a 'stirrup' bracket that fixes to them at their sides - these mounting points could also be used to fix a shield to.

Following this thread for some time... just want to make sure that I understand - it is legal to use driving lights on the road, at any height, but not fog lamps? I could motor with driving lights bolted to the front of my roof rack and not fall afoul of the law?

Mounting light on the roof
Hi guys, first post on this site.

Question? I purchased 4 IPF 868 lights and will mount them on a mm4x4 light bar. The question is how do I get the wiring from the roof to inside of the 110 without having any visible wires running down the side?

Thanks

Heinrich

Welcome Heinrichnel,

I do not have roof lights but have heard of people running the cables down a snorkel if you've got one fitted! If you haven't got one fitted here's the excuse you need to go buy one! 'Fekete' another forum member will be able to advise in greater detail...send him a 'pm' or he may be along shortly!

Mounting light on the roof
Thanks guys, love this forum, I belong to another couple but never the same amount of responses!

Cibit, do you think something like a Hella plug would work instead of just drilling a hole in the roof? Or any other type of plug that could be used?

This weekend I was looking over a modified disco 1. He had a cut off switch through a wing and it looked a really good job. I am sure a plug would be the best option much easier to waterproof it. The silicone around the wires look amatuerish really. I would change it but it would mean headlining removal Razz . Will leave it till it leaks Thumbs Up 59 2.4 110 XS Utility

Put a quick connector in that you can disconect at the rack and chase the wires down the snorkel, into the wing then up into the battery box Thumbs Up

From the battery box, come out up the bulkhead and in through the grommet behind the dash to your switches Thumbs Up You cannot teach stupid people to do clever things

Same as Discocuzzy... but save drilling holes through the wing just go down the snorkel and under the bonnet and then through the bulk head Thumbs Up oh welcome 2 the site as well NEVER TAKE LIFE SERIOUSLY. NOBODY GETS OUT ALIVE ANYWAY
