I have decided to start a thread where we could vent our frustration at poor use of English on this forum and elsewhere, without naming and shaming the perpetrators. Think of it as some form of therapy.
Whaddya mean, grammar nazi?? Writing 'should of' instead of 'should have' appears to be acceptable to many on this forum, but it does not make it correct! Homographs which are the subject of the thread where the poster should really know better, e.g. 'breaks' instead of 'brakes'. What have you got? What are your pet-peeves? The whole point of language is to communicate. Provided that people can understand what's being said, what does it matter whether they spell or punctuate correctly? Imagine the contributions that would be missed if we gave the impression that there was a minimum acceptable level of proficiency in English, particularly some of our members were English isn't their first language!
What bothers me more in this day and age is that people still feel the need to bang on about it - if you don't like and can't cope with mentally translating it then don't read it. E mail and Internet forums are widely recognised as areas where slavish adherence to outmoded rules of language aren't required, unless you're on www.grammarnazi.com, in which case, knock yourself out. Oh yes, and for the sake of context, Chris |

Got one thanks, then I bought a Defender...
The dyslexics I have worked with make far more effort than most when it comes to written work of any kind, and put 'normal' people (whatever that means) to shame. Therefore I have come to the conclusion that the vast majority of the truly awful posts are from people who simply can't be ar**ed.
Touché!
Naturally, and far be it from me want some kind to cause some kind of apprehension amongst our non-English speaking LR-nuts about posting on here. But, again this serves to reinforce my point. The international posters on here, writing in a language that is not their mother tongue, put some people on here to shame who manage to mangle their own language. I simply wanted to create a non-confrontational thread (like the grumpy old man thread) where one can vent one's frustrations without appearing to be unnecessarily unfriendly or rude. Maybe I should have emphasised the 'or elsewhere' part of my original post. So, for instance, on a national, tax-funded broadcaster, I regularly hear presenters conflating 'racism' with 'xenophobia'. Euhh, excuse me? You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |
