The bottom of the radiator doesn't do a huge amount of cooling I don't think, for best results try a bit of cardboard between the inter cooler and rad at the top, I believe the top is where most of the cooling happens 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Makes sense: when the engine is cold, the thermosthat is closed and there is no flow of cooling fluid through the radiator.
Therefore warming up time from cold engine is not much influenced. Only after the engine is at working temperature, it easier to maintain the temperature because of less heat loss through the engine compartment and radiator by restricted air flow. Have you taken your viscous fan off yet? Once a long time ago in an atempt to make my 200tdi 90 warm up quicker I made a rad muff, took the fan off and sealed up the gaps between the bonnet and the wings with old door seals. Think it helped a bit, but not worth the effort.

I don't think TD5s work too well with no fan. The old TDIs were ok, but TD5...not such a great idea. 1998 110 300Tdi White Hard Top

I have thought about lagging the heater box under the bonnet to stop it being blasted with cold air.Anyone tried it ? 2005 Td5 90 XS

Have you been reading my mind? I was changing the oil at the weekend and was looking at the heater box and pipes thinking - pipe lagging and foam coat for the heater box. 1999 Defender TD5 110

My TD5 Ninety XS takes about five miles to warm up in winter.
In summer, with the caravan on a motorway it keeps going into limp mode from overheating. If you've got air-con the radiator's right on the limit of capacity. |

Laurie, that sounds like you've got a problem, to be honest. I tow a big twin axle 'van with my 110 XS and even with four bikes on the roof there isn't a hint of overheating. Mine also takes longer than five minutes to warm up, too. Darren

I said 5 miles not minutes.
It only blips into limp mode. Just lifting off the throttle momentarily resets it. I've checked the temperature at which it limps. It's 105c. I've owned it from 6,700 miles and it's now around 70,000. |

Agree with LRA, never had overheating issue with my Td5 with aircon.

Sorry, my mistake. Nevertheless, it shouldn't go into limp mode just towing a caravan. Darren 110 USW BUILD THREAD - EXPEDITION TRAILER - 200tdi 90 BUILD THREAD - SANKEY TRAILER - IG@landroveranorak "You came in that thing? You're braver than I thought!" - Princess Leia |

Its my understanding that the electric fan in front of the radiators of A/C models is supposed to cut in at 28 degrees ambient temperature to assist cooling. 2005 Td5 90 XS

I do really use mine.
It does some serious offroading. It started happening after driving through a load of gloop. Having given the radiator a thorough cleaning it almost stopped. It is very difficult to clean the rad properly on an XS. |
