Caterham: re Early signs are map sensor has fixed engine once and for all.

In a nutshell....What were the main issues before replacing the MAP. BM52

In a nutshell....

After various mechanical issues / replacements mechanically all is good yet I seem to get intermittent excessive knocking so as far as I'm concerned it's gotta be wiring / sensors or ecu. After reading various posts etc I guessed it was either EGR map or MAF. I can hear the EGR clean cycle and I can hear it operate when reving the environment while stationary so figured it wasn't the EGR. Lorryman100 mentioned the map also measures temp which seemed to tie up with mine being smoother when (mostly) so gave it a go. Also my map was well dirty a year back so cleaned it which 'seemed' to make a difference so you decided to bite the bullet and swap it.

I wouldn't have said the idle was erratic but driving at low speed in 1st wasn't enjoyable as it was erratic / the speed was like the engine was hunting like it was on kangaroo juice.

Could be similar then as mine is an auto it could disquise the hunting which it has been doing and my son said when i was slowly driving down the lane he thought the engine sounded like it was kangerooing or i was playing on the throttle.

ahem - i was nearly home from work and listening to the end of a rather loud rock track Whistle

Need to investigate this MAP thingy then.

sprayed WD into tow electrics and top of gearbox electrics then at last minute had a run out to an airfield last night and the reversing light seems to have "Self Healed" .. Thumbs Up

finished off yesterday job....put the propshaft back in and adjusted the hand brake
washed another couple of wheels and the bonnet.
and then a test drive and minor adjustment on the hand brake.

can't believe how well the hand brake works.......all going VERY nicely thank you Thumbs Up

Re-wired the DRL's so they now switch off when sidelights are turned on. Cool _______________________________

Nobby is that an easy thing? how did you do it? i couldn't think how without using one of those 'voltage sensing' thingies which seemed pretty poor but maybe i just got a bad one Cheers, David

David,

I just took a feed from the positive of the sidelight circuit through the voltage sensing unit, applied positive energises relay. Lights off DRL's on, lengine off back to sensing mode. Personally I've only had one problem with the DRL's and that was a poor connection, the lamp unit to sensing relay was heavily corroded. Replaced with directly soldered joints. _______________________________

I just used a 5 pin relay to power the DRL's. Ignition on power input and output 1to DRL's. Lead from panel lights as switching lead. When sidelights switched on and panel lights light up then the relay is triggered to switch output to output 2 which is not connected to anything, so DRL's come on with ignition and switch off when sidelights switched on. Easy Whistle LANDYWATCH

Fitted a Rovacraft winch bar, then made up a bracket to mount the 20" BajaDesigns light bar and started wiring it up.

Still waiting on the swivel recovery points to show up so the bar will have to come off again in a coupla days (hopefully they arrive in a coupla days). While it's off again I'll replace the standard bumper bolts, wich I reused, with high tensile items.
