Battery charging on vehicle
This question may have been asked and answered in the past but after 3 hours searching I am unable to find any record.

I have normally disconnected or removed a vehicle battery to charge it.

I splashed out and bought a C tek charger, for my caravan batteries, along with a comfort charger and panel connector as I thought that I could just connect them upto the land rover battery and switch on to maintain the battery.

Today I have some spare time so I was just about to start the installation when a nagging doubt crept into me mind, " If I connect the panel connector to the battery and then connect the charger what damage will I do the electronic bits of the Land Rover" I have tried to reason with myself that C Tek would not sell the adaptors if it wasn't safe but the doubt will not go away and SHMBO has stopped the job until I can get an answer.

I cannot go through the 12s as this has a relay which only operates in one direction to prevent the vehicle draining the caravan battery.

Is anyone able to help an old duffer with the answer. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place,
so it doesn't take much to Censored us off.

Oh right, I take it that the C Tek is not like my old chargers that bang the charge in as fast as the battery will take it. Don't make old people mad.

my c-tec is designed to stay connected to the vehicle for long periods ... check the documentation on the web site or instructions but as far as i know that's what c-tecs are for, for the model I have it states the chargers can be connected for months

have a look here for the manuals http://www.ctek.com/gb/en/page/support/manuals

These are a brilliant addition to any trickle charger... Can give a very neat installation and easy connection without lifting up the seat.

Also have the benefit it wont cause any any damage (esp the first one) if you drive off and forget to unplug.

With an IP rating of 42 connected and 40 disconnected I would say 'under cover' ideally, or inside the vehicle or even in a higher rated enclosure if fitting externally. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!!

Ideal for fridges etc in the back of a defender, but for battery charger you can mount to the grill surround or front bumper.

With the optional cover the base is sealed from the elements.

You see these plugs fitted to fire engines etc.... so no damage caused if they drive off without disconnecting.

As I have already said I have the parts but was concerned about charging the battery while still connected to the vehicle. Don't make old people mad.
