Not sure what happened on the last post!!
But I've got the exact same problem as you had with the temp guage. Did you manage to located the problem?? I've changed the water pump this morning and it's still playing up!! |

I would guess it is an electric problem not mechanical. Are all connection behind the dash still OK as I had the spedometer connection partly coming loose and had very strange reactions form all sensors in the dash.
I noticed that too, I was thinking my gauge was broken. Normally it's fine standing steady just under halfway but if I get stuck in deep mud and try te get out for a while the td5 gets warm as it needs to work spinning the 35" simexes and then suddenly the temp gauge jumps up and I loose power. I was thinking about changing out the gauge but clearly nothing is wrong with it. Maybe I should install another independend gauge instead. Somwhere was mentioned that the td5 radiator is just sufficient, are there better once? Thanks Roel. I will take a look at the wiring tomorrow, I've checked the earth point and given them a good file and clean. But it's still doing its own thing. The temp will rise up to 1/4 then jump back down to bottom, it never goes over half way. So it's currently off road untill I get this sorted .. I've been thinking the head gasket. I just hope it's something simple!!

If you coolant level is OK and you don't see anything strange in that area, I would think it would be electrically.
Can't you borrow a diagnostics system from somebody so you can read the temp values while driving? It will probably give you the same values as you read the ECU values. It had been using some water, that's one of the reasons I bought the water pump, then the pump developed a noise!! Which I thought could be bearing, But driving home last night this problem occurred so the first think I did this morning was to fit the pump. Got 4 bolts off easy up till the last bolt which snapped!! Took me a good hour to get it out.. Anyway fitted it all back topped up with coolant and water, bled the system left it running for around 45 mins checking the temp every 10 mins. All seemed fine until I moved it off the drive max 10 yards and gauge was dancing again!
I'm thinking of taking it up to a head specialist to do a pressure test on it, just to rule a few things out hopefully.. As I don't have the tools here to do it myself. |

I did solve it, by replacing the coolant temp sensor in the top hose. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

Thanks . You say it's located in the top hose, where exactly is that? I've not got a manual yet! Is thee just the one sensor for the gauge?

Remove the engine cover and standing at the front facing the engine, the sensor is the front right hand corner of the engine where the top water hose comes to the head.
I'm sure it is just one sensor for the gauge 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |
