Probably a sticking mech. The grease goes hard as the weather gets colder so I found the best way was to strip the mech out and clean it up thoroughly then wd40 instead and reapply wd a couple times a year

I had a similar problem with my rear door that would rarely unlock just gave it a good spray with WD40 from everywhere i could get it in been o.k for a year or more now.
As mentioned previously it seems the grease thickens in the cold. 2005 Td5 90 XS Steve |

Brilliant thanks chaps Glad its a cheap an easy fix, been spending too much on the defender recently. Michael was just telling me a story about a friend of his who slept with a land rover, lonely nights in the desert..
