Sorted out my cargo barrier and fitted my defender2.net stickers
![]() The OEM cargo barrier is a great piece of kit for protecting you and yours from flying baggage and protecting your baggage from prying hands (so long as certain other security measures are taken). However, it appears to be designed for a subtly different vehicle to the Defender. Not completely different, so that you'd take it back and ask for the right one, just slightly different so that you persevere in trying to fix it. When I first fitted it, I had to straighten out the bottom brackets (that came with a profiled step in them) to cater for the 'actual' width of the 110 and elongate a couple of holes to give me enough slack to allow for the tolerances of manufacture (110 or barrier, I can't decide). Once fitted, however, it's great and doesn't rattle at all. It also comes with handy tighteners to allow you to remove it my hand. THAT IS EXCEPT FOR 2 AREAS - WHICH ARE HELD IN BY ALLEN KEY BOLTS! Which is completely pointless as you then need to faff about with an allen key to get the thing out! What's more, the allen bolts that LR supply are as soft as F*@K so after 2 removals and re-fits, they'd rounded off. Of course, they wouldn't come out under gentle persuasion because the threads are full of manufacturer's paint. I bought the most expensive Tap and Die set on Screwfix and attempted to drill and remove the bolt. Result, 2 broken drills and a shattered screw-extractor. ![]() Click image to enlarge In the end, I had to angle grind the captive nut off the back of the bracket. ![]() Finally painted in red-oxide and then matt black to match the rest of the bracket and reassembled with some proper high strength steel M8 nuts and bolts. You still need a socket set to remove the barrier (which I always have in the car anyway) but you can tighten and loosen as required with as much force as required ![]() Also fitted my inside and out defender2.net stickers ![]() ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() + New Defender 110 First Edition |

![]() I'm glad i fitted mine myself though as the stealers would have needed the car for a week to get that sorted! No doubt after ordering 5 new guards along the way to see if the holes are better placed. |

Hello to all,
Dave is busy assisting two Chilean mechanics to put in our engine, so I took the opportunity to get my hands on the laptop. Your forum is fab - full of positive help and funny stories. We may not have our beloved defender anymore but we think of her every day. This is what we did with our defender one day.....a photo of us on pole position at the Formula one circuit the weekend after the Grand Prix in Kuala Lumpur. We love our truck but she will never compare to our landy. ![]() Rose ![]() Admin note: this post has had its images recovered from a money grabbing photo hosting site and reinstated ![]() Last edited by nessie on 22nd Mar 2010 11:28pm.
