There's no reason why alloy wheel nuts should wear out and need replacing every five years Either something very unusual has occurred or you've bought the wrong socket. Darren

I led to believe it’s our old adversary bi metallic corrosion between the nut and cover

It would seem not that uncommon. Land Rover vehicles appear frequently, but also others.

Yep, the nuts do swell.
I've got a bag of them in the garage to replace them when they swell too much for the 27mm socket... Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

Cheers Guys.
So I take it I just buy the same ones again? No after market ones that don't rust and don't swell.... Thanks |

Best thing I found is to soak the nuts (before they are corroded ) in thinned waxoyl or any good any rust fluid overnight then quick wide off then let then dry ...seems to help stop them corroding inside under the cap

Apologies for reviving an old thread but I have need to know regarding these things.
When I got my truck from the previous owner, I negotiated the acquisition of his boost alloys and corresponding wheel nuts as well. He reluctantly gave them over on the condition that I hand over the original steel wheels, the wheel nuts for the steel wheels and for the spare, and the 27mm tire wrench as it was useless to me. Upon fitting, the alloy wheel nuts he gave me were all 28mm rather than 27mm but the guy who put them on apparently used a 12 sided spanner rather a proper 6 sided socket hence deforming some of the wheel nut covers. Upon looking for replacements, I found out that even alloy wheel nuts with stainless covers for the Defender are 27mm and not 28mm! Does this mean that all the wheel nuts that I was given were all swollen?! In any case, my options now are to either acquire wheel nuts with stainless covers or the solid steel wheel nuts for alloys. I was told that while the wheel nuts with stainless covers look nice, the solid steel ones last forever. What do all y'all think? Thanks. |

OEM Nut is 27mm the 28mm is a get around
Just buy new 27mm nuts I'm sure Mal (K9) will provide the relevant link to a great aftermarket supplier |
