But I don't see why when people pay best part of 1K for a set that they then have to go through the process of fitting gaskets, rubber seals and mastic to prevent their investment from deteriorating in such a short time frame.
This doesn't just apply to lights. It goes for all accessories. They should be able to fit and forget. Not have to unbolt them to ensure they aren't degrading.

but then on reflection over the last 5 yrs or so there has been a distinct change in the sort of person that owns Defenders. When I first entered the Defender family it was all about offroading and competing. Everything that was purchased had a function and was thought out. Now it seems to be a new group that bolt bling and tat to their Defenders. I'm not saying its a bad thing but people try to make the Defender, which is a working vehicle into a family run around which it isn't.

When Landrover first made the county station wagon, a family run around is exactly what it became Rolling Eyes

Dgardel yes! 100% true! Thumbs Up

I agree to a certain extent, grubby oikes and hard working farmers used to be the mainstay of Defender ownership. Buy one, use it, leave it in a field and allow it to rot and work itself to death! NOT NOW though. Just because people aren't in the Military, can't plough a field on tramp pig's poo throughout their house or go off road at every opportunity does this mean they should expect less from their vehicle because they don't abuse it and be berated because of it?
Mine isn't a family run around and as a 90 never could be. It's a toy and a hobby nothing else.
Most manufacturers of extras the main failing for me is the poor quality fixings supplied with them. It is these that deteriorate quickly and rot transfers quickly to the vehicle? Extras should be fit and forget I agree but if you're bright enough to use a little ingenuity to make it better, due possibly to the supplier eaking out a little more profit by using cheap fixings then why on Earth not especially if it will prolong the inevitable onset of rot? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

I started composing a reply straight after Walfys post (as a purveyor of bolt on bling and tat) but didnt get to finish it (as someone came in to buy some bling Mr. Green ) but I agree 100% with K9F, after all, who is it that dictates what a vehicle is to be used for ???

Just ordered a set for a friend, still the best option in my eyes for a head light upgrade. I'm sure the rest of the car will rust before the lights stop working anyway. If they stop working, I'm sure Tim will make good anyway.

Cheers,
Jon

Another vote for Tim and Mobile Centre, we often have clients specifying 'Speaker' headlights by name and I'm more than happy to fit Tim's merchandise, infact the FCX 130 is covered in Mobile Centre products Thumbs Up

Perhaps I wasn't to clear with my statement. Everything that I have bolted to all my LR have served a purpose and have been thought out. I suppose it comes down to the old saying of 1 mans rubbish is another mans gold. Or something like that.
I like my vehicles to be functional. Each to their own. I am not shy of spending money when I need to, if it enhances my vehicle in the way that I like. Others do have different ideas as to what a Defender is to them. Doesn't mean that my way or their way is the right way. It's what suits each individual. As much as I hate the phrase Brendan keeps coming out with, Want and need. Do we need blingy lights or is it just a want. Do we need carpet in a LR now or is it a want. Do we need a roofrack or could we do with roofrails. The list goes on and on. What some might say is a need others will say that it's a want. It all comes down to making a Defender an extension of ourselves and how deep your pockets are.
But for those that have been around LR for a few years will see the point that I made about the amount of bling that now gets bolted to a Defender. Perhaps I'm an old dinosaur and should get with it??? Perhaps my view of what a Defender should be is wrong. I know that 1 day when I own a new Defender there will be a list of bling and tat (to some) will be bolted onto it. But the bits that I would purchase would of been thought through and purchased because of a need rather than keeping up with the Jones.

@ Go Beyond. Your kit isn't tat and I never said it was, it's very bling and nice but I couldn't justify such nice goodies in a Defender if I knew it was going to be a workhorse. But that is my opinion.

Anyway this is going away from the original post by TJ101 about the state of his lights. And whether the corrosion is acceptable on lights that are 10 months old. 110 D250 SE HT

I wasn't taking offence Walfy Thumbs Up , infact I agree with you about the whole want or need thing but if we took that to its literal sense then we would all be running around in 950cc base model Fiestas as very few of us actually NEED 4WD vehicles (certainly not all the time)

Back to corrosion and lights, I do believe Speaker have recently changed their finish from powder coated to phosphate, perhaps to alleviate this problem ?

I have a client who has ordered a set of Speaker headlights and we are upgrading the rings at the same time, I will be making sure I follow K9F's advice (he's a sea dog so he should know a thing or to about corrosion) Mr. Green

'Unapproved' may have been a bad choice of terminology perhaps? Nevertheless I suspect the early stainless steel bezels had been manufactured to size for OEM lights and not JWS......This would in effect render them 'unapproved by default?'

Just for clarification and from personal experience the early stainless steel bezel rings were a very, very tight fit as I 'presume' they were manufactured to fit OEM lights that didn't have the powder/protective coating that the JWS had. It was akin to fitting a bicycle tyre, you'd get one side on and the other would pop off. I personally used longer locking tab screws to ensure I could tighten and pull the ring on evenly around the circumference with the same amount of force which worked for me. Maybe Tim could clarify but I would have thought the rings may have been reworked since then to make them an easier fit perhaps?

"Compromising the protective coating on the JWS lamps by fitting bezels that were designed for different lamps" Approved or not? I'll let you decide yourself.

Tim is an honourable man who helped me out despite having little or no obligation to do do when I had a seperate issue with my JWS. The product as mentioned is an excellent one, well proven and well tested with a comparison test against another well known make on the forum with photographs to boot. I still wouldn't hesitate to purchase given the experiences posted here and irrespective of how the bezels now fit I would still seal them safe in the knowledge they would then be a fit and forget item.

This is a very good thread, particularly for someone who doesn't even have a Defender yet, but who was considering fitting the Speaker Headlights.
So, with that in mind, what sort/brand of "surrounds" should be ordered?
Cheers, Pickles.

Mal, the comparison test on here was put there by myself as you will remember. It was really only about the light output of the Speaker and the Nolden, not really about their technical qualities. You will have noted that from that eyeball test we came away that the Speakers throw a bit better light than the Nolden, which by no means should be understood that the Nolden are not a good product.
I have personally both bought the SpeakerEVOs and the SS rings from Tim. Excellent service as you say, but I presume there is no way to assume that one would be not compatible with the other here. If that would be the case, I am sure that Tim would advertise them clearly as being non compatible.
The jury is still out, next week when my truck is in for maintenance, the dealer will take them off. I hope all is going to be ok, but we will see.
What I did in the meantime is order the silicone grease and a set of black coated SS rings from Naka. Naka are also offering the Speakers, the Nolden, and the SS rings both natural and black covered. When I discussed on the phone with Naka about this, they know very well about the problem with bi-metal corrosion of the Speakers, but were clear that the problem is more related to the older first version.
We will see next week....
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.
