It is ok Evo passivation isn't able to stop the corrosion my old 8700 after 2years was perfect (the secrets is do not damage the black paint with the ring), the new evo made oxidations after 2 months. I had to put the silicòn grease. By the way, nolden case quality seems better..... If you look closer the JWS, in my opinion, the company have quality problems and not all pieces was made with the same precision (eg different beam pattern) Discovery 5 td6 HSE Stornoway Gray Outback Engineering Limited Edition IID Pro MV License |

Anybody else cared to check the backside of their Speaker 8700 EVO's for eventual reaction with the SS rings and corrosion?
We now already know that Daniele had such corrosion after 2 months which is no good. I intend to order a tube of this Liqui Moly silicone grease to avoid corrosion to start. (Hopefully there is none yet, cross fingers). I also have the SS rings which seem to react with the alu of the Speakers, but have not checked yet, which will do during next service two weeks from now. In the meantime think this thread is worthwhile to keep alive, so if others have bothered to check, would be good to hear result, and this could be indicative of how serious a problem it is. We talk about very expensive upgrade equipment here which many of us have bought, so worth doing all we can to identify risk and take preventive or corrective action. Think alarm bells are starting to go off here, even if we sofar have only limited nbr of confirmations that these Speaker 8700EVO do corrode when in contact with steel or stainless steel rings.
Time for someone to start thinking of what we can do to either still avoid this corrosion from happening, or if it already is happening, what can be done to stop it to deteriorate the rear of the lamps further. Only thing we have seen sofar is that Daniele (dgardel) advised to use silicone grease in between the rings and the lamp, but is that sufficient action, especially to stop a process which is going on already. Silicone grease good enough? Can it also stop already started/progressing corrosion? Are there other things that can be done, etc....... As said I will have mine checked in a few weeks now, will let you know then. I also think that Tim of Mobile Centre who is the or a major importer, has to wake up to this concern, and take the bull by the horns if necessary. Eric You never actually own a Defender. I don't think anyone was having a go at a sponsor. Speaker lights appear to have an awesome reputation, but if there was an issue with them, then I'm sure that the sponsor, who also has an awesome reputation, would want to know about it.

Pickles, not sure if you are responding to any particular post in this thread, but you are correct. I think a huge number of people have paid significant money for these Speakers, and would expect them to be as high quality manufacturing standard as has been advocated. If now it appears that there is an issue with multiple users having them corroding, it indeed is important that this gets known, and that those marketing them (Speaker/importer/distributor) are made aware of this so that they can define their actions. So in the first place it is important that other users who will check their installed lamps will report back here, be it positive or negative. Eric You never actually own a Defender. Forum Sponsor's response seems quite clear - "if corrosion affects the operation of the lamp subject to normal criteria we will exchange the lamp for a new one." and implies the corrosion itself is not a warranty issue. |
