I wonder... is there a significant difference between LHD and RHD in this respect? I ask because when I was driving one here I honestly didn't find this to be a problem. And I'm tall, at 190cm. I read many reports about this but quickly forgot about it while driving. I actually felt pretty comfortable sitting in a Defender all day.
My only other theory is that I drive a Caterham 7, which is definitely snug, so perhaps I'm just using to driving without needed a lot of elbow room. |

lol Setok - the Caterham will be why - I had a Lotus Rollerskate for a number of years and got very used to a "confined" cabin - mind you getting into the Defender is at least a bit easier Defender 110 Puma Utility XS

You can also carry more in a Landy I used to get quite a bit in my Caterham but I don't think the passenger was ever tha comfortable with a great big hold-all on their lap. One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS + New Defender 110 First Edition |

Hi everyone - I am also an arm out of the window driver. Currently I’ve got push button doors so the whole window winds down. I want to put series doors in because they are cool and also in the summer I can take the top right off. However I recently looked at some and I am a bit worried I will not be able to get my elbow out. Anyone got first hand (elbow) experience? Can anyone tell me how many mm from the edge of the door (not the edge of the window as I think the frame is slightly different) to the window line when it is fully open? I could wedge a bit of wood in there and try it out…
Thanks! Where we’re going we don’t need roads. |

I can honestly say that I’ve never noticed it as being a problem, but moving from a Porsche 911 to a Defender the Defender feels more spacious. Ride like you stole it!!
If I’m not on a bike it’s because only a 4x4 will do… 2011 2.4 Puma 90 HT |

I’m 6’4 and give or take 100kgs and I’ve never struggled for room in any Defender we’re had.
Fitting a smaller steering wheel does make all the difference though, i have a moto lita in the farm truck as the standard one was a pain in the arse |

Maybe a smaller steering wheel as your arm will pulled away from the window not much but some. and think about security at the same time as you could opt for one which you could take off at night etc so no false economy. I also had issues of the handle pushing on my leg so I got some of the leather ones to replace the hard plastic ones which I soaked over night before fitting to soften up a bit and they have worked for me also had seat riser rails but to be honest put your knees closer to the steering wheel but helps you stretch out your legs a bit.
Normal small steering wheel I have had worked well pic below Click image to enlarge |
