C(h)ubby Box Recommendations
Hi folks,

I’ve currently got a Masai 4x4 chubby box as follows:

https://www.masai4x4.com/Chubby-Box-Land-R...p205218878

There wasn’t a proper way to fit it so I had to drill holes, and due to the flimsy nature of the MDF it seems to be made of, the more I use it the more wobbly it becomes, and tightening the bolts just cuts through the MDF.

Does anyone have any recommendations of one similar - I like the height of it - but with better and more secure fittings? Thank you.

I've currently got a Britpart one in mine - although it looks very similar to the masai one you've linked to.

It came up on FB marketplace, from someone who had bought it, but never used it. I typically shy away from britpart, but it was good value and local and I bought it as a temporary stop gap while I decided what i really wanted there (I'll be fitting a custom centre console at somepoint).

But I must say, it's absolutely fine. works well, bolted down fine (I fitted some nutserts to attach it with), and has worked perfectly every since. It is also MDF, but I've not had any issues with bolts pulling through.

Not often you hear a positive BP review, but credit where it's due, I'd buy that particular product again if the need arose.

My issue is that it didn’t fit neatly into the gap that was left by the centre console tray. I like the idea of the nutserts but I just feel there must be one that comes ready off the shelf that I can’t possibly drill incorrectly or mess up in some way!

Use some thick penny washers to prevent pull through with MDF, spreads the load. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Thanks Steve - I countersunk the bolt heads to give me a flush lining of the box, which means I couldn't use washers. I might just sacrifice this for the benefit of a more robust and better secured box as you've suggested.

Countersink the washers slightly also? Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details

The counterbores (the pockets where the head of the screw fits) on my cubby were all gone when I bought my 90, the mdf had crumbled away.
My solution was to glue and screw in a piece of 6mm plywood same size of the cubby box on the underside, to re create the counterbore and so far been good.
Varnished the plywood to protect from any water/condensation... but I should really paint it black as slightly visible. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

That’s a good idea - if I replace the bottom of the box then it gives me a chance to countersink everything properly and use the proper washers. Significantly cheaper than buying a whole new box too.

What do you guys use as spacers between the box and the hatch cover? Or does the bottom of your box have a raised lip so it can sit flush with the floor of the defender?

My box has two strips of wood that raise it slightly so the bottom of the box is not on the floor. Prob 1”x1/2” and they are lined up with the mounting holes Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

I did not replace the bottom, I simply glued and screwed it to the bottom.
As raceit mentions, on Puma, the box has 2 strips of wood that space it from the lid (they are wedges, so higher on one side than the other). Mine had also come off the mdf, so those were first screwed to the plywood that I made, from the top down, and then the whole thing glued and screwed to the bottom of the cubby. It is very strong now.

On earlier defenders, there were 4 plastic spacers. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Right that makes sense - I’ve currently got plastic spacers (those things you use to put on the legs of sofas to stop them scratching wooden floors) and the wooden strips would definitely be more secure.

Do the mounting holes go all the way through the wooden strips?

Perfect thanks. Will get some wood put on to stabilise it and drill the holes down to the rivnuts.
