Help somebody has replaced my Puma with a poorly 2.25 diesel
Does anybody else have the following symptoms (07MY puma 2.4L, 60000kms):

Starting in the morning from cold (ie negative temperatures) I get a cloud of blue smoke and an engine that sounds like a poorly 2.25 SIII diesel after 400,000 miles. After 10 seconds the blue smoke stops, but the engine still rattles like a bag of nails.

Now, until the engine is hot (i mean the temp guage needle horizontal - normal running temp) I can't take the engine above 2000rpm without it sounding like a machine gun, and the engine trying to run away (accelerate out of control), certainly no turbo whine and seems to be low on power. Strangely, pressing the clutch stops this, and the symptoms go away when the engine is up to running temperature. However, it still appears to make more noise than before, although the power is there, and it seems to run OK. However the engine (Mis-)management warning light doesn't come on.

This has been a gradual change over the last 20000kms, but is starting to get annoying.

my local dealer came up with - no fault codes = no problem, which I am sure is a well known response Evil or Very Mad

As I am starting to get a bit worried, any ideas would be appreciated, so I can point my dealer in the right direction?

For all those that read these posts and think.... with all these problems I will never by a defender, I would like to add that this is the first problem I have had with it, and would replace it with another without hesitation..... the whole family loves the beast (or Snotty as she is called)

Get back to the dealer and start stamping your feet! Being a 2007 its going to be out of warranty at some point this year.... you dont want them dragging their feet so it goes out of warranty and then ends up costing YOU to get it fixed.

Just my opinion Wink Mark

Wasn't there a problem with the early 2007 engines and the oil circulation or something at startup. Get the dealer to go through the LR service bulletins. 110 2.4TDCi

This is what you after???

Title: 2.4 Puma Engine Knock Noise.
Type: LD - Defender - All Years - Special Service Messages - Engine
Name / Part No: SSM38792
Info Type: Service Bulletins
Version No: 1

Title: 2.4 Puma Engine Knock Noise.
Last Modified: 21-JUL-2008 09:44
Category: Engine
Symptom: 497000 Engine Noise

Content Issue: Heavy audible knocking heard on start up.
Cause: On start up oil pressures can cause the piston cooling jets, (PCJ), to latch into a zero flow condition. Due to hysteresis effect in design the jets do not unlatch until the engine is warm and the oil pressures lower again. During this time with no pressurized oil jet flow to the lower pistons / cylinder bores, overheat and scuff conditions / damage can occur.

Action: Replace the engine assy but ensure only engines post serial # ELD00080707063602 are used.
This condition will not occur on vehicles post assured Vin# 9A767162.
Engines post the info above are fitted with modified PCJ internal springs and this issue is now closed.

Just been complaining about a very similar problem a few weeks ago here with mine. Just got it back after a month diagnosing at a local diesel specialist. Problem found eventually to be injector number 3, however, the other 3 will probably need changing before the year is out. An ouch at £208 per injector, plus diagnosing, ECU remapping etc. But at least I have a car back.

Was told 'it could be dodgy fuel causing the injectors to wear somewhat quicker' My car is now at 175000 miles. Very low.

Hi,
I've had a similar problem on starting once on my way from Spain to UK. The fault was water in the fuel. I stopped a couple of Kms to fill the tank up and the fuel must have been contaminated with water.
Cure - I refilled the tank at the earliest possible opportunity in another petrol station and darined the fuel filter.
Voila - No Problems since.
PS: Those bloody rascals of Spanish petrol pumps trying to make extra money by adding water to Diesel!!
