Mud Console and hazard lights switch
Hi all,

Last weekend I placed a Mud Console in my 1991 200TDi Defender 90.
Besides placing a CB and a audio system, I also wanted to relocate the 3 switches (hazard lights, rear windows heater and the interior lights) to the console.

What's the best way for doing this?

Leave the plug where it is and use extention cables?
Try to get the plug and wires from behind the dashboard en pull them to the left (it's a RHD)?
Or make new wire connections at the relays and lead those to the new switch?

Thanx in advance!
Jelle

I would cut off the plug that goes on to the back of the hazard switch, and just solder/heat shrink on some extension pieces.

You may be able to pull the plug back some of the distance back to the "centre" of the dash, but I don't know how far it will reach.

I have done the Mud-dsh & Carling Hazard switch modification and can confirm you will need to cut the wires at the old switch and add sufficient extensions to them to get to the new switch. You may be able to source some of the wires closer to the new switch but I can't remember which ones (earth, perm live, switched live??).

Yes, just cut and extend them using solder joints & heat-shrink.
Fitted a Raptor and used Carling switches throughout (inc Hazard) and looks very neat. ONE LIFE, GET IT!

Ok! I was afraid that would be the job... Next weekend then...

Think it would make a nice extra thing to order with a Mud Console: a "plug-O-extention" cable for these 3 switches.

Had a look behind the main dashboard clocks... my God what a mess! Saw a small dozen off loose and cut off wires.

Also the interior lights feed that comes out of the switch (red/white) is completely toasted! Just bare threaths with too old isolation tape wrapped around it. I think I'll just disconnect that one and get a other one at the Mud Console.

Thanx!

I too was having the same thoughts over the Mudconsole and the three switches to the left of the steering wheel. I didnt want to cut them and then resolder the connections. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Replace those switches with Carling items, they're a bit more expensive but look and work far better.

I have the Carling switches ready to be connected.
Just hoped that there is some smart way for getting the wires to the middle.
But it will be an old school solder job I'm afraid.

As an alternative, you could try these:
