Td5 issues
I’ve struggled for a while for anyone to be able to put their finger on what my issue might be.

In short, I have a 2003 Defender 90 CSW, with a safari snorkel and mt’s. It has had the EGR removed and otherwise is completely stock.

It now has 116k miles on it, I purchased it with 40k. I’ve noticed for a while now, that strangely on some days it seems down on power. Whilst not highly scientific, I travel quite a long dual carriageway route every day, and on the same quite steep hill, it will sit at 75 some days, others drop to 70. Im sure even once it wanted to accelerate at 75...

Some days when im in a hurry (on a private road of course) she wont really want to get passed 80, yet others she sits comfortably at 85.

I notice it on the days it seems to be running well as it just seems to rev much smoother up to the top end. Add in that sometimes it'll knock slightly on idle.

I accept that fitting mt’s would’ve dropped fuel economy, but even being relatively careful, most of the time I’m struggling to achieve 24mpg, yet on days where I’ve done a lot of driving and she seems to be running better, I’ve filled up and got 26+mpg.

Any ideas?

Diagnostics havent shown anything, had a new MAF recently and cleaned the intake sensor 2003 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Belize Green - "Betty"

It's been very windy lately.
Have you taken wind direction into account?
This is no joke, it really does make a difference.

I wonder if air pressure makes a difference as at altitude it makes a massive difference to performance. It may be worth Making a note of the weather conditions on the days you notice a difference or having a barometer in the car?

Altitude shouldn't make a difference to a turbo.
Seriously affects normally aspirated diesels.

I meant the air pressure at altitude

Edit: just reread your comment and didn't realise there would be a difference with being a turbo'ed engine

Humidity will make a difference, as altitude due to the denseness of the air, but the effects I would have thought would be negligible and unnoticeable on standard engine.
I would check all the turbo pipe work. Whistle I had something similar a few years ago, which turned out to be a busted jubaliee clip on the intercooler Thumbs Up
Have you checked for a sticking wastegate, oil in the loom ??

no oil in the loom,

and I totally understand your point laurie and do notice wind playing a part at higher speeds, but doesnt explain it not running as smoothly. 2003 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Belize Green - "Betty"

Re: Td5 issues
I had a similar issue and I change the radiator and hoses and now the power is back, I believe that the problem was that the radiator was clogged and the temperature rise making the engine less efficient, I measure it with my Nanocom (before it broke) and it use to go up to 105C now it hardly goes more than 85C. Augusto

Air flow meter on its way out?

On days that it doesn't drive well, try unplugging it and see if the power "reappears"

Mine is very similar never that noticeable in terms of lack of speed but some days just seems to have a few more bhp than another. I actually put it down to weather and air temps/ air pressure. Mine has 46k on the clock, new injector loom, well serviced. Never actually seen what it drives like with maf disconnected. 2001 TD5 110 County Station Wagon - sold

Mine is the same. Safari snorkel etc.. Done all the usual suspects. Can be dangerously slow at pulling out in traffic-then goes like a flying machine????
