This sounds like classic MAF failure to me. Put your foot down, nothing, then whoosh, your off. I only run alive unrated MAF's now, and have only knackered one of those with water ingress Andy |

Had a similar problem with our disco 2 seemed to be lacking power on certain days. Recently fitted a new fuel pump (genuine one non genuine fuel gauges don't register right) just pulled our caravan to north Yorkshire what a difference it's made.

I've replaced the MAF-didn't cure problem. The fuel pressure has also been checked |

Lately when the engine is cold at low rpms when the turbo spools up, it makes quite a loud whistle if this could possibly be related. 2003 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Belize Green - "Betty"

most turbo's do that, again to do with air density
Have you checked all your Turbo pipes yet ??? Early TD5 Delaminated as Laurie says, and I still tink you could have an intermitten leak on the charge side |

I'm trying to make plans to get either BAS or Alive to take a look as they should know what a healthy Td5 should drive like, I'll keep you all updated. 2003 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Belize Green - "Betty"

As you may have seen, I've had the remap done, Alive checked everything and all seems in order.
The only possible culprit we can see left that could be causing this mysterious sometimes power loss, is a collapsing cat. She's run lovely for the last few weeks, so if it comes back, a decat pipe will be going on. 2003 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Belize Green - "Betty" 1958 Series IIA 109 Station Wagon - "Randolph" - Awaiting Restoration 2019 Jeep Wrangler JL Rubicon - SOLD 2006 Volvo V70 D5 - Ocean Race Edition, SOLD 2003 VW Passat Estate 1.9TDI - SOLD 2008 BMW 320D M Sport Estate - SOLD 2001 Defender 90 Td5 Hard Top - SOLD |

Been watching this thread with interest, as I too am not running right and have seen a drop in MPG & performance over the last 4k miles. (I've been monitoring it on a MPG app).
Car is now running at about 20mpg, nearer 23 at the beginning of year, and 350 miles out of a tank last year. How do you know the MAF sensor is duff, I've run it for about 20miles unplugged and can't really notice any real change. Heading back home next weekend, so I'll get the local Indy to run a diagnosis check on it, then look at replacing it. Anything else I should be thinking of? Once that is done, its blank EGR, off CAT and then time for a remap. Will continue to watch and keep updated. |

Drop in MPG and performance usually points to the MAF.
Usually if you unplug it you'll notice an improvement, but when mine went, it didn't seem to make any difference. If your local has a plug in diagnostic machine, nanocom or whatever, you can read the output from the MAF and see if it's knackered or not. takes minutes, if that. |

Interestingly, after my 20 miles running with the MAF unplugged, I plugged it on for the trip home (250miles). Laden with kit, bike on a towbar bike rack and cruising at motor way speeds (+/-10%) its managed a happier 23.8 MPG, with a bit more grunt than before. Not sure of the unplugged woke the MAF up as it was reconnected.
Visit to the Indy for a dianostics check next week should clarify more. |

Could just be a crappy connection on it.... the MAF on my project90 came up as duff with nanocom plugged in, so i bought a new one, checked it again and it was working! (after being unplugged a couple of times)

I'm having the same connector problems with the MAF on my 3.9 V8 in the Dakar.
It's got a couple of cable ties pulling it tight at the moment. |
