The none techincal answer would be I'm waiting to see what breaks first...

The more technical answer is I have looked at this already, and know the limits. There are a few options if I do need to uprate further. Comes down to what the conversion is in (90/110/130), what it's used for, how it's driven etc. As it is, my 90 is only a lightweight poverty spec version.

Hi Ian,

I am seriously considering this upgrade, I live in Dubai so if I went ahead I would have to fit the majority of the kit myself and have a final setup from you, if you were serious about that option?

I have the same worry about the input shaft though, could you elaborate on the "few options" that you have available please?

The vehicle is a 90 that is used as a daily runner/dune bashing toy at the weekends that occasionally gets loaded up with some camping gear. Thanks.

Alive vs CSK vs BAS vs IRB vs Twisted ....... And the rest.

All doing re maps for both 2.2 and 2.4. I currently have a 2.4 and not realised the range available to me. Is there much difference in what's on offer for this engine at stage one? It also seems like to grab the extra 30bhp to achieve what's talked about above, you need to throw 100% more cash at the thing?

Maybe a 3.2 is the more cost effective option?

Its true, there is a few choices... and a lot of good and bad companies....

As I posted the other day -

If it was me putting my hand in my pocket I'd be asking:

1. Has the company got the capability to do full diagnostic check before making any changes and the ability to fix faults? And I don't mean just looking at the fault codes with some generic hand held tool (things like injector compensation values are common faults that must be fixed!)

2. Has the company got the capability to look at the software/calibration that is currently on your Defender and make sure it is the latest standard Land Rover version. If it's not, can they update to the latest version?
Land Rover over the production period made lots of changes to the calibration - and you should always ensure you have the latest version.

3. Have they got any proof of what they are actually going to deliver? I would expect to see some proper development and testing - including rolling road testing with proof of what is going to be delivered. Not just some generic tune that has the driver demand (throttle pedal response) increased, but doesn't actually deliver any more power... yet they have picked a power and torque figure from out of the sky and rely on the placebo effect.

4. Once done, have they got the capability to complete a pump learn followed by a pilot correction learn? The set up of the Puma fuel system is critical to correct performance - anyone that says otherwise, or fobs you off is talking rubbish. And these should be redone after a calibration change!!

5. Once completed, do they do a proper road test to make sure everything is correct and ensure you are happy.

6. Also, I'd ask questions about skills and experience... I think you might be shocked by some of the answers!




If you are going to do something, then you should do it properly.


Tuning is complicated thing - and it's very easy to do it badly.... and done wrong it will destroy your engine.



Also - don't get caught up on BHP.

A Tdci is a diesel, so you should be looking at torque delivery - both max torque and the area which it is over and how it is delivered.

People chat in the pub about BHP - but torque is what you gets you off the mark, and torque is what gives you the push back in your seat when you accelerate, torque is the force that makes you pull up hill. Thumbs Up

A Tdci as standard gives about 118bhp and 320Nm in 4th gear (as is torque truncated) at the flywheel - so straight away you can ignore all those people who claim they make 122bhp and 360Nm lol as standard.


My entry level tune - IRB410 gives 410Nm in all gears and a choice of a sport version or a standard version depending on customer requirement.

BHP only increases by a small amount - but you can see the difference in the usable RPM range.

Torque on the other hand increases dramatically, and again over a bigger band.

The 3.2 is a good option - as is a cracking engine (and I might have a conversion available if you are interested as I was supposed to be doing a conversion for a customer) - but not a cheap conversion.

On a 2.4 Defender -

An IRB410 or IRB410sport is £499 + vat.

Both make the same power, but the sport (as it's name suggests) as a more aggressive throttle ramp - thus a sportier drive.

This includes all of the diagnostic check, injector learn, calibration updates etc.

And we can make a few modifications to your air intake Whistle

If I remember my physics corectly BHP= torque x revolutions. So if you increase torque you should also see a good increase in BHP unless you have a decrease in revs. Or maybe 0 level Physics does'nt apply anymore.
