Puma 110 2.4 Earth points
Having had a couple of electrical maladies (in the shop waiting for repair) that could be caused or aggravated by poor electrical earth I wondering if any one has insight in how the the main loom is earthed? ie does it feed all earth lines back to the battery negative terminal or does it have distributed earth points to chassis etc
I've noticed that the headlamps dip beam dims if the heater fan is switched on (to setting 3 as 1 and 2 were broken) and that the rear hi-level brake light 12V feed had arc'ed and burnt out its feed as it entered the lamp housing (its like a heated screen element) plus the recent failure of the heater fan control (as above 1 and 2 not working) indicated poor earths could be causing higher currents than ideal and component failure Confused.
A quick skeg of the workshop manual showed only earths to Transfer case and little mention of anything else though I'd have expected an engine earth to chassis as well.
Ps my earth paranioa stems from TVRs of old where a large number of faults seemed to be poor earth related (or knackered alternators-batteries-probably brought on by poor earths) 2023 110 P400e

I know there's an earth that can be seen when looking under the front drivers side wheel arch at the back that goes to the chassis.

It's worth at least installing an earth from the battery to the floor of the battery box internally as a theft prevention measure ....

Found a schematic for post my12 defenders wiring (suspect theres some common features with mine) and it looks like theres earth points located around the loom so my hi-level brake lamp seems to share an earth with nearly every electrical item at the rear (if not all) though it doesnt say where that earth is located. so suspect front shares similar earth points (heater and headlamps etc) . though it could be joints in the loom for the converging earth leads that are faulty though I'd have hoped that wouldn't happen until a lot later in its life Confused.
PS nearly had to ask what the extra earth to battery box would do.. until the penny dropped (derr - my brain is still replenishing its caffiene levels: ta for the tip) 2023 110 P400e

I'm going to revive this as I suspect that my MY11 D110 needs to have all the earth / ground points inspected just to be sure. Too many electric gremlins happening so asides from fitting relays to all the electrical components (to be done soon) I want to make sure that all the earth / ground points are good.

Hi,

on the subject of earths, Im wondering (as a newbie) where the earth cables are. I am experiencing an intermittent indicator fault.

Are there any easy earths to check - before I take it to the garage - aargh.?
