Regular driving I change between 2,800 and 3,000rpm. If having fun I will take it up to about 4,000rpm.
If you check out the BAS rolling road maps you will see that power starts to drop off at about 3,700rpm and then hits the cliff at just over 4,000rpm. Powerband is about 2,400rpm through 3,700rpm anything over than and you are losing performance and it is pretty pointless (especially in Std map). *EDIT* Forgot to mention, Torque starts to drop off just under 3,000rpm, so yes, you get more power but less torque so you are fighting a losing battle after about 3,200rpm.* Glyn |

Me too, although I run standard tune. Anything over 3,200 and you're starting to waste your time. |

+1 for Glynn. They aren't economical at the best of times, just drive it...... Makes a good bellow at about 4,000 after 4,500 starts to loose puff and sound a bit wheezy. ===================================

Until the engine is warmed up properly, I do not rev past 2200.

Seems we are generally in the same boat. I will stick to my low 2's and give it a few herbs from time to time to blow out any soot...

Depends on what mood I'm in... and what is trying to keep up with a farmers spec Defender lol.
[URL=] Click image to enlarge[/URL] This is one of the last runs on the rolling - as you can see it pulls from below 1200rpm and then gives a good bell shape of power (bhp). My 90 in current form will rev to just over 4500rpm - with over 100bhp at wheels from 1870rpm to about 3500rpm (peak calculates to 176bhp at 3100rpm). In reality peak torque has come and gone - and we are talking diesels not petrol! However, the 2.4 is a very rev happy diesel (the 2.2 even more so as is virtually a 'square' engine').... my 2.4 is back on the rolling road soon with more to come. If we look at a Standard Defender 2.4 vs my entry level calibrations... [URL=] Click image to enlarge[/URL] We can see a similar shape - but a much flatter bell shaped. With the standard calibration at 3500rpm you start hitting the roll out into the rev limiter (where the fuelling is removed to prevent engine over speed), so not much point reving much harder - and you are only getting 90bhp at the wheels max (118bhp at the wheels).... and you only get 85 ish bhp from 2800rpm to 3500rpm. Normally I cruise around 1800-2200 revs in 6th.
I try & change up a gear as soon as I can, but without labouring it...Generally in the higher gears I keep it above 1700rpm unless downhill... Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

Max has been about 3200, smoother with better fuel. What mod is best at giving more torque at lower engine speeds? Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Made for the needy, not the greedy.
